When painting out of doors or away from your studio or home, all artists inevitably face the age old problem of how to carry your wet paintings home without damaging them or getting paint on your clothes, or someone else’s! These clever, inexpensive and practical canvas carrying accessories will help you transport wet paintings with ease.
Canvas Separating Clips
Canvas separating clips are similar to bulldog clips, however they have 2 spaces with a ‘spacer’ in between which enables you to carry two canvases of the same size at the same time. There are hinges on either side of the clip that you can clip back into place to ensure that the clips have a grip on the edge of your canvas. Secure the clips so that the front of both of your canvases are facing inwards; this will mean that the wet work is protected and you will have the stretcher frame exposed, making it that much easier to carry. Larger canvases will require 2 clips on the top edge and 2 clips on the bottom edge to prevent the work from touching surfaces. There are 4 clips in each pack.
Canvas Separating Pins
Canvas separating pins are simple but effective! Small plastic barrels with spikes protruding from either side, which you stab into the corners of 2 same sized canvases facing one another. Then you can wrap them in bubble wrap, or out them into a portfolio folder or bag, knowing that the pins will act as spacers and prevent the wet work from getting damaged. There are 8 pins in a pack.
Canvas Carrier
The canvas carrier is a metal handle with a screw clamp fixed to either side of it. The screw clamp will hold canvases, boards and panels up to 2.5cm deep. The canvas carrier will help to carry one painting or 2, and can be hung up in the studio while the work is drying too.
Wooden Canvas Carriers
At Jackson’s we sell a large and a medium wooden canvas carrier. These wooden structures are made up of a handle fixed to a frame that has an adjustable central support. The central support holds the top edge of the canvas while the bottom edge holds the bottom edge of the canvas. The large version will hold canvases of different sizes but the medium version only carries one size of canvas, 2 in quantity, up to 25 inches in height.
