My collectors used to always ask me if it’s possible to frame my gouache paintings unglazed, so I\'ve spent quite a bit of time looking for and trying out various matt acrylics. I found the AV acrylic gouaches to be the best option. They have the same velvety finish as gouaches do, and are water resistant and self-levelling (i.e. no brush strokes). The only difference with gouache is that they dry to slightly darker film while gouache typically becomes lighter as it dries, so if you’re used to gouache, it’s something to consider when you’re planning your painting.
I\'ve used them on paper, canvas, wood panels and fibreglass with the same great results.
For a precise painting technique and straight lines, I’d recommend using them with the brushes from this series bellow: http://www.jacksonsart.com/p25467/Pro_Arte_:_Brush_Wallet_set_-_Acrylix_:_0-2-4-6_Rnd_&_1/4_Flat/product_info.html.
For an extra protection I varnish my paintings with 2 coats of the Winsor & Newton Matt UV Varnish for acrylics. It’s also self-levelling and results in no shift of colour when used with the AV acrylic gouaches but it\'s important to get a nice varnishing brush. I have one from Windsor and Newton as well.
I’ve been using this combination of materials for about 2 years now.
