Isabey brushes have been in production since 1895

The invention of the metal ferrule in the mid 18th century meant that the manufacturing of brushes, which had up until then been a highly empirical process, became a craft. However, we can still see that the methods used in the 14th century and described by Cennino Cennini have hardly changed. Nowadays a scrupulous respect for tradition is still the guiding principle behind high quality manufacturing. We at Isabey have helped to keep this traditional know-how alive. The process of manufacturing Isabey brushes is still entirely manual. The knotting, the turning and the ferruling come before the assembly of the brush head using carefully chosen embossed wood.

The extra fine hairs are treasures passed down from one generation to the next and they are selected based on their intrinsic qualities. The Squirrel is the finest, the Kolinsky Sable which is almost as valuable as gold is well-known for its finesse and softness, its resilience and its expressiveness. At Isabey we work with only the most impeccable quality materials. Fine brushes give the tip of the hair a round or flat, cat’s tongue or stippling, wheatgrain or fan, etc. shape.Sable, Squirrel, Bristles, Siberian Fitch, etc. Each fibre and each brush shape is used for a different feel and a different movement.
