Arches : Aquarelle : Gummed Watercolour Pad : 23x31cm : 12 sheets : 140lb : 300gsm Not

The beauty and quality of Arches watercolour papers make them suitable for gouache, acrylics, oil and ink as well. For more than five centuries, artists around the world have depended upon Arches for optimum quality papers, worthy of their finest work. Its whiteness is natural, obtained without optical brighteners. Sizing is important to watercolour paper - it helps the paper accept washes, scratching and erasing without affecting the actual fibres and strength of the paper. Arches is sized with natural gelatin and made in France since 1492.
Arches Aquarelle Gummed Watercolour Pads are gummed down the short edge. The paper is mould-made, 100% cotton, and gelatine tub sized with a neutral pH.

I purchased this paper after reading reviews online, and I was not disappointed. The NOT finish is velvet-like and it feels really luxurious to paint on. The paper is thick and doesn’t buckle easily, thanks to it being gelatine-sized.Rating
I have been painting on this with Sennelier watercolours and Winsor and Newton Designer Gouache and whilst it has good absorbency, the colours do not sink into it too much or bleed heavily, as with cheaper brands of paper. It’s therefore suited to various techniques whether that be wet-on-wet painting or more controlled, detailed studies. The paints retain their vibrancy and luminosity and I enjoy how certain colours are more prone to granulation on this surface. The off white tone is soft and not a bluey, high white which I’m not so keen on, but it’s also not too yellowy or creamy in colour, so it’s possible to leave the paper showing for highlights. On that note, it lifts well and can take a reasonable amount of scrubbing.
Another aspect I like is the format. The pad is just over A4 size, making it ideal for commissions, as there is wiggle room for you to use masking tape and trim the sheets down once done. I accidentally worked on the ‘back’ of one of the sheets without realizing, and I’m pleased to say that I had no issue with this, although the surface is a touch grainier, so you could use both sides of the sheets, if you wish.
I would thoroughly recommend this paper and I’m keen to try it with oils and acrylics next. It’s easy to see why it’s been made in this way in France since 1492! (Posted on 18/11/2022)- Review by Feefo

This has become my favourite paper, very good surface and allows for some correction. (Posted on 05/02/2019)Rating - Review by Helena
I used to not favor Arches because I found the paper to hard and textured, but as I progress with watercolour, trying out softer brushes and using more water, I now begin to understand why so many artists use this paper. It simply takes whatever you throw at it and produses great results every time! (Posted on 25/11/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo
