The lovely folk at Danthonia Designs in Australia got in touch last week to let us know about their new video. I wanted to share it with you as I found it really inspiring, a real eye opener with regard to learning more about what we could do with our wood and lino cutting tools, and gilding materials, such as gold leaf. The video shows Danthonia Designs making a sign but these techniques could also be applied to a stunning relief sculpture too, don’t you think?
Here’s a list of materials that we recommend to those who’d like to try some of the techniques demonstrated in the video:
(In order of appearance!)
Pfeil Tools – lovely mushroom-shape handled tools that are comfortable to use when cutting wood.
bench hook – useful when cutting into wood as it will stop you slipping and making mistakes in your cutting, as well as making it safer for you as well.
Craft Knife (this is my own personal favourite craft knife that Jackson’s sell, others are available!)
Golden Fluid Acrylic – perfect consistency for even, flat applications of colour on wood or other smooth surfaces.
Priming Brush – Great for really even applications
Frisket Film – Useful plastic film that can be cut into easily to create stencils.
Gold Leaf – we sell as transfer (stuck on slips of greaseproof paper) and loose (which requires a gilders tip for application). A wide range of carat/shades available
Gold Size – glue for gold leaf, different drying times available depending on how you would like to apply the gold leaf
Gilder’s Tip – special brush for applying loose sheets of gold leaf
