An Art Holiday is a great opportunity to paint in an environment away from your normal working routine. With daily chores out of the equation, you can concentrate on painting as well as relaxing! Art Holidays are the perfect activity for those who like some focus to their holiday. Below are the factors we believe you must consider when finding the right painting holiday for you, as well as a few links to our favourites.
1. What kind of painting would you like to do?
Do you want to paint in oils, watercolours, acrylics or pastel? Not all teachers will welcome all mediums as they may specialise in a particular type of painting so it is really important to find out.

2. What level of experience do you have?
You need to think about your standard – do you have any experience painting? Although the majority of art holidays state that they welcome painters of all levels, it’s another factor that is definitely worth checking. A week of painting among those more experienced than you and not getting sufficient support can make you feel neglected and out of your depth, and similarly if you have more experience than the rest of your group, although probably not as much of a problem, you may find yourself having to listen to basic instruction that you don’t need to hear again. So it’s worth checking!

3. How much painting do you really want to do?
Most art holiday websites will have a standard itinerary to view so you can get an idea of how much painting you will actually be doing. Some holidays are quite serious and the itinerary will describe a whole day painting (with perhaps an end of day critique) each day. Others will describe a shorter portion of the day assigned to painting, with more free time for you to explore the area you are in and relax by participating in other activities. Some even organise other non painting activities for you, wine tasting or cooking are often offered on such holidays.

4. Non-painting partners and companions
Painting is not always a shared hobby between partners, and so many people that go on an art holiday go alone so that they can immerse themselves in painting. However there are some art holidays that welcome non painting partners to the art holiday, and some arrange non painting activities for them. So it’s always worth finding out and considering what would work best for you.

5. What do you want to paint and where do you want to be?
Painting Holidays are available all over the world and led by so many different artists, all with their own individual approach to painting. It is really important that you attend a painting holiday relaxed, with an open mind, willing to absorb the lessons that your leader will want to impart to you. Or, if you don’t want to be taught per se but just want to paint with others it’s important that that is what your chosen painting holiday offers. Some painting holidays are led by renowned artists, and so you pay for the privilege to paint alongside an artist that has rich experience and the ability to inspire. Other holidays are attractive for their envious studio facilities and location. Think about whether you will prefer painting in a hot climate or a cool one, and whether you’d like to paint urban landscape, rural landscape, seascapes, markets or unique natural phenomena. Other holidays are subject focused, so attendees know that they are going to spend the week considering a particular aspect of painting such as landscape painting or colour, for example.
