A tip for acrylic painters –
Creating hard edges in acrylic painting using masking tape
This tip might be useful for artists who wish to tape off an edge in their acrylic painting composition for painting shapes with hard edges.
Even on a very smooth surface paint often seeps under the edge of masking tape but on a texture such as canvas it is even harder to get a sealed edge of the tape. If you are layering hard edge shapes, so need to tape on top of paint, it may be necessary to use low-tack tape to be sure to not disturb your paint layers and that could be even more likely to allow paint under the edge.
One good way to keep the paint from seeping is to paint a thin layer of clear acrylic over the edge of the tape, wait until it is dry, then paint on your acrylic colour and pull away the masking tape. This removes the colour over the top as well as tears the very thin layer of clear acrylic along the tape line. So you have a perfect edge.
I have tried a few different things and found the best combination is using these 3 steps:
1. Brush on 2 or 3 coats of a clear fluid medium such as GAC 500 (let dry to the touch between coats)
2. The tape will get wet and wavy so the next step is essential – finger burnishing. Burnish down the wet tape with your finger. Do this for each of the 2 or 3 applications – run your finger along the edge of the wet tape to press down all the wavy edges that appear when the tape reacts to the water in the medium, until it lies flat.
3. When you are happy that you tape is lying flat and the edge has a thin seal then paint on your colour and remove the tape before the paint is dry. If the paint dries it forms a bond with the edge of the tape and I find when removing the tape the tape tears and leaves a thin piece of tape stuck to the paint that is difficult to remove.
As always, I recommend experimenting to find what works best for what you are trying to accomplish and the materials you are using. But I hope this give you a good start!
If you are not looking for a hard edge but a more-or-less straight edge then masking tape can still be useful. Instead of sealing it and using it as a stencil you can hand paint your acrylic or oil up to the edge and not over. By using it as a guide in this way you get a pretty straight line but it still looks hand-painted.
Rolls of Canvas Offer
10% off Jackson’s 10m rolls of cotton duck canvas
Jackson’s cotton duck canvas comes in three weights: 8-ounce, 10-ounce and 12-ounce, available primed with univeral primer or unprimed. Primed canvas is shipped on the roll to prevent cracking damage to the priming layer that can occur if it is folded; unprimed can be shipped on the roll or folded. Acrylic painting tip
Tim Fisher Soft Pastel Liquefier spray is a type of alcohol in a mist bottle that I found also works for solving an acrylic painting problem.
It works to burst bubbles in acrylic that would otherwise dry to unsightly pin holes in your paint surface.
Bubbles in the paint can occur from shaking a bottle of paint and medium or water to mix them – when you pour the paint it can have bubbles that won’t pop before the paint dries. Bubbles can also occur from frothing the paint with your brush on the canvas. A few of the bubbles may pop before the paint dries but many times the bubbles remain and when the paint dries they leave little holes. A quick mist of the pastel liquefier on the wet paint will burst all the bubbles on the surface and the paint will settle into the spaces and no holes will remain.
This is an alternative use for the product, not the one is is made for, but please experiment and try it to see if it works for you.

A Tip for Oil Painters
Onion softening of very dried paint
This tip will be useful for oil painters who, like me, set aside unfinished paintings for long periods or if you wish to recycle your old oil paintings.
If you have set aside a work-in-progress oil painting and not got back to it for many months or years or you wish to paint over an old oil painting, the thoroughly dry paint on the surface is sometimes a problem. If you start painting and find the paint beading up on the hard surface or if the new paint begins to peel away as it dries you may benefit from softening the surface first. The slippery surface is especially apparent if you use a very oily mix for glazing. The well-dried surface of the painting is very hard and seems to repel paint. Even if the paint seems to stick, as it dries you can find that is starts to craze and flake off.
An age-old technique for getting the hard paint surface to soften enough to accept paint is to rub the surface with an onion. It might be the sulphur in the onion, I’m not sure, but I find it does the trick. I crush the onion in so the juice is squeezed out of the whole thing. I have found a small onion will do a 30x40cm painting, and I need a few large onions for a larger painting. It makes a difference if your onion is juicy, it may take two onions if they are a bit older and soft. When I can see the wetness of the onion juice all over the area I am working on I leave it for 20 minutes, then wash off the onion residue and as soon as it is dry the surface readily accepts the new layer of paint. If you are painting over a dried oil painting intending to use it as a blank canvas again, it might be a good practice to always make the onion step part of that process to ensure the new paint is actually attached to the old paint.
Please note that I am not talking about a painting with a final varnish on it. This will probably not work on a varnish as the resin probably won’t soften this way.

Tip: Erasing Coloured Pencil
I discovered this method while researching erasers and comparing the qualities of over 80 rubbers for Choosing A Rubber: Comparing Erasers.
The best method for removal of coloured pencil or a large amount of dark graphite is using a 2-step process.
Step 1: press and lift (do not rub) with a putty rubber until no more comes off, folding the collected colour inside the rubber.
Step 2: finish erasing with a plastic eraser or rubber eraser in a rubbing manner.
The putty rubber press-and-lift procedure will remove the excess colour or graphite that might smear. This leaves you free to rub the rest away with a plastic eraser.
