This quick-drying and versatile medium reflects the fast pace of contemporary life. It came to prominence in the middle of the 20th century, becoming a significant medium whose use is deeply interconnected with important modern art movements such as Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Like all art materials, paint formulations vary because each manufacturer or artist has their own method of production. Model acrylic paint is typically said to contain around 41% water, 32% polymer binder, and 6.5% pigments and other additives. In oil paint, the binder and vehicle is oil – whether that is linseed, walnut, poppyseed, or safflower oil – which is combined with pigments to create oil paint. On the other hand, acrylic paint uses a polymer binder that requires water as its vehicle. When the water and binder are combined, they form a polymer emulsion, which is then mixed with pigment to produce acrylic paint.

Because acrylic paint is water-based, it dries much faster than oil paint. Since the 1900s, Otto Röhm had been researching acrylic polymers to create synthetic materials for industrial coatings, adhesives, and clear plastics. The aim was that these more reliable materials could replace the less stable natural resins, which could be inconsistent in colour, water-sensitive, and prone to degradation. This research eventually led to the invention of acrylic resin and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) – commercially known as Plexiglas – with acrylic paint emerging later on as an unintended result of these industrial advances.

Otto Röhm

In 1947, acrylic resin was successfully used to create the first usable acrylic paint. The mass production of goods and the rapid modernisation of American lifestyles went hand in hand with the invention and popularity of acrylic paints.

Pop Art was a direct response to this and aimed to challenge the classical traditions of the art world by referencing popular culture by means of everyday objects, advertising, and consumer goods. The invention of acrylic paint also meant that artists could quickly make flat paintings that dried within a matter of minutes. This allowed them to rapidly layer images and compositions, helping shape the bold and exaggerated energy of the artistic movement.

Whilst the origins and symbolism used are different in the United States compared to the United Kingdom, the imagery and use of acrylic paint were similar. British artist David Hockney was integral to the mainstream use of acrylic paints, as he was one of the first artists to make extensive use of them in his large canvases.

He moved from England to California in the mid-sixties and stated he found acrylic paint more suitable for capturing the hot, dry landscapes there, due to its fast drying abilities. In his autobiography, when discussing his series of ‘Splash’ paintings, he notes that he “loved the idea of painting this thing that lasts for two seconds: it takes me two weeks to paint this event that lasts for two seconds”. In 1949, Edward H. Seymour, the owner of a paint company in Sycamore, Illinois, was searching for a solution to painting radiators when his wife, Bonnie Seymour, suggested he make something similar to an aerosol. Their development quickly rose to popularity with car manufacturers as it streamlined the process of painting cars and parts.

Spray paint became central to the modern street art scene, which first emerged in New York City in the late 1960s, and then quickly expanded throughout the rest of the USA.
