Episode 86 <\/strong>: Finding your style<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For a couple of months the Ask an Artist Team are taking a break from recording to concentrate on other things that need to be done: On-line teaching and book writing both have deadlines that cannot be put off! While they are away we they have selected some of their favourite episodes from the archive. <\/p>\n

This weeks’ replay is on the subject of finding you style. Making an impression in the world of art is not easy and if your work has no individual identity then it’s even harder. Peter and Laura discuss some ways of figuring out what your style is and how to develop it. First released in January 2020<\/p>\n

Every artist needs their own voice, an individual style that sets them apart from the crowd. In this episode Peter and Laura look at how to find your unique style and the importance of continuing to develop and grow that individuality.<\/p>\n

In this episode\u2026<\/h2>\n

1.      It\u2019s part of an artist\u2019s job to explore and experiment and it\u2019s equally important to keep analyzing your findings. It\u2019s by understanding where your preferences and passions lie that you\u2019ll begin to find your style.<\/p>\n

2.      Don\u2019t get stuck in a rut and become a one trick pony. There are plenty of clever techniques out there, but they should serve your work, not define your style. Take it from Laura, she used to look after a one trick pony and his ability to undo gates with his teeth got old very fast.<\/p>\n

3.      Don\u2019t get comfortable. Part of your individuality comes from moving forward and developing in new directions. Remember that development should be linear, not random. Galleries and buyers will see value in your growth, but need to able to recognize your voice in every new departure.<\/p>\n

4.      Your individuality and focus need to be apparent whatever the medium if you work with multiple disciplines. Peter rightly points out that nobody likes a flitter.<\/p>\n

5.      Don\u2019t repeat work just because it sold well the first time. Sequels usually disappoint both artist and audience.<\/p>\n

6.      Look at other artists, try other techniques and enrich your experience. Always see research like this in terms of helping to develop your individuality, not an exercise in imitating others.<\/p>\n

You can\u2019t fake originality and personal style. It\u2019s something only you can find and you\u2019ll do it through making work that explores your passions. It\u2019s that passion that\u2019ll keep your audience engaged.<\/p>\n
