The exhibition focuses on the artist’s formative years at Bradford Regional College of Art in the 1950s and how the training and experimentation pursued there stayed with him and was further drawn on throughout his career. Works on display include rarely seen anatomical and observational drawings, early graphite portraits as well as the print series Rakes Progress (1961-63): a semi-autobiographical story about Hockney, the ‘rake’, and the down and outs he met in New York in the early 1960s. The format, story and numbering system in this series is based on William Hogarth’s 1735 suite of prints of the same title. In addition to these early pieces, also on display are significant later works which demonstrate Hockney’s continued interest in pushing the boundaries of drawing practice using new technologies.

The MAC (Metropolitan Arts Centre)
10 Exchange Street West
Belfast
BT1 2NJ

An Amateur’s Passion: Lord Fitzwilliam’s Print Collection

August 9, 2016 – January 29, 2017

The Fitzwilliam Museum’s founder, Lord Fitzwilliam, was an enthusiastic collector of prints. In his lifetime he amassed around 40,000 loose impressions and devoted significant time and energy arranging them into albums of varying sizes to keep on the shelves of his library. His collection reflects his broad taste, ranging from etchings by Rembrandt to works by other highly skilled but less fashionable printmakers. This exhibition looks at what interested Fitzwilliam most in acquiring and ordering his print collection and will feature examples of his albums, rarely seen in public but offering a fascinating insight into the mind of a late 18th century collector.

Fitzwilliam Museum (Charrington Print Room)
Trumpington Street
Cambridge
CB2 1RB

Winifred Knights (1899-1947)

8 June – 18 September 2016

Winifred Knights

The first major retrospective of the artist’s work reunites all of her completed paintings for the first time since their creation.

Dulwich Picture Gallery
Gallery Road
London
SE21 7AD

Beatrix Potter- Watercolours And Photographs From The Collection

August 7 – October 30 2016

Beatrix Potter

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s birth Perth Museum & Art Gallery will be offering a rare chance to see to see some of her lesser known watercolours and photographs. Four hundred years on, artist Robin Reynolds has recreated the 6.6ft panorama to depict the brilliant architecture of today’s metropolis. Published in the year of Shakespeare’s death, Visscher’s engraving is one of the few visual records of London before much of it was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.
