Has earned a permanent place in my palette

A wonderful convenience colour that's great on its own or added with other colours. I'll definitely be buying a tube of this when the pan runs out.

Stunning colour

A gorgeous alternative to neutrals and just stunning in landscapes. My only regret is that I didn't buy a bigger tube.

Angela

A lovely convenient grey

Enjoying using Jane's grey for making stormy skies and using it for shadows. A very useful convenience colour.

interesting color, use it for mixing my own Moonglow. The only problem is that ist hard to re-wet PG18. once it has dried, becomes like a stone

A 'bluer' blue than French Ultramarine, so it looks like it'll be a useful addition to the set of Daniel Smith 'essentials', which I've been enjoying for a while.

I can already tell from the small swatches I've painted that I'm going to have a lot of fun with this paint. I love the granulation in this one, and I think it would go really well for a shadowy forest with a vintage touch.

I love the quality of Daniel Smith paints. This might be my new favorite color to mix greens / muted oranges with...

I disagree with other reviewers on this colour. It isn’t a particularly natural looking green for landscapes and excessively dulls other colours on mixing. When it separates on the palette, the substrate is gritty and an unattractive beige. I found that it muddied other colours in my palette.

Was unsure at first, very deep blue grey, similar to Sodalite GEnuine. Bought for skin tones for Dark skin tones, works well.

I've tried a range of cobalt violets and prefer the PV14 ones. This is a clean colour on the cooler side, but it's not very heavily pigmented so a lot of it is required, and takes a very long time to re-wet. It does not have good dispersal quality, it is either a thick gloop or very thin and watery, it doesn't seem to have a middle property between the two. Because of this it seems as if quite a lot of it ends up stuck in the brush and washed into the jar. It's a good enough colour, but I won't buy this again. I know that pigments do cause different behavioural qualities to a paint, but I think if other companies can resolve this, then so can DS.

JB

Review

Very difficult to re-wet. Mostly a dark, sticky paint which doesn't spread or mix well. Very muted in colour. It's not a pretty blue, in that you have to settle out the paint yourself and probably lose the binders in the process, to remove the heavy, dark particles to achieve any of the pale, clear blue (in the image here. The swatch image implies that the pale, clean blue is the majority particle, but it is very much in the minority, and even washed in this way, most of the particles would not be this colour. In fact it is mostly grey and a dark, opaque, cold, grey-black, not warm blue. I've tried to use it to enrich mixes, or use it for quality dark blue, but it has dispersal problems.

I love this color, rich and deep, and the sparkle is magic to look at with water, super satisfying

Review

This is a useful colour. In a dilute wash it separates into green and a reddish brown, good for leaves or grass on earth. In mass it is a natural-looking dark green. It also mixes well with other colours to make a brighter green with yellow, or a browner green with red colours. Easy to use and well behaved.

Jane

I was disappointed as the paint is very very weak, which i did not expect from Daniel Smith Paints which are usually very strong. I wont be buying this colour again .

Such a versatile colour that's worth the price point. it's useful for painting those dark rich forest foliage as well as stormy scenes but also can be used creatively in brighter greens. It makes a great black as well.

Red is a tricky pigment in watercolours. It’s hard to track down a true, pillar box red and this is as close as I’ve come to it. Mixes lovely oranges mixed wi5 various yellows.

Ruth Rout

Review

Gorgeous colour, but definitely have a play with it before you use it in a painting to see what it does - there's a colourshift in the granulation as it dries which is fascinating but not what I expected, with some delightful red clay tones in the granulation which the description alludes to, but the swatch doesn't prepare you for.

Clare

Review

Not a lot of tonal variation in this one, and as others have said, super granulating which may or may not be your jam. I got is as part of a set, or I wouldn't have got it at all, and though I find it interesting to play with on the page, in practise, I just don't find many uses for it yet in my style of watercolour painting. Doesn't play well with other paints.

Clare

Review

A beautiful sooty black, mixes well with blues and browns, and no dead animals in it - hooray! I will say though that, out of the tube and even carefully mixed into a pan, this is a thick, almost stiff paint that doesn't sink flat - I can get past its poor behaviour in the palette, though, because it's just lovely on the paper.

Clare

Review

Lovely shade, but much more granulating than I expected from the swatch, which is a shame - finding it very difficult to get non-granulating browns in palette from Daniel Smith and find most of the browns I use most are Holbein.

Clare

Review

Lovely, and not *too* granulating to be a problem in colour wet on wet colour transitions on the page. I bought it as a mixing colour, but in practise mostly use it to add warmth and lightness to grey-blue and blue-black tints on the page.

Clare

Review

Beautiful colour, which I wouldn't have bought from the main swatch showing here if I hadn't had it on a dot card to try. The second, bluer swatch is a better representation of it - definitely more of a denim-y blue than a jade blue - it's beautiful and makes for a beautiful wash too.

Clare

Review

Beautiful colour, but also more pastelly and opaque than I'd first hoped, which means I use it less than most of mine as it doesn't make for a good addition to wet on wet washes and mixes on the paper.

Clare

Review

A good middle of the road green, but almost always needs a little muting for me in practise, which is where it lost a star. The phthalos are all lovely, luminous smooth colours though and this is no exception; it's just also not really ever quite the green you want.

Clare

Review

Perfect. I veered away from paints with too many pigments initially, but this is just a perfect green - both by itself and blended into yellower, bluer or browner tones. I can see why it's so often used and recommended.

Clare

Review

Beautiful dark green with just a little granulation, edges more toward yellow than blue so of the two swatches here, I'd say the striped swatch is the more accurate. As with many of the Primatek mineral paints though, I find it does dry fast on the page, so might be trickier to work with in wet on wet washes if that's your jam.

Clare

Review

I agree with others, that it's very rarely the right green by itself, but makes for a wonderful mixing green in the palette.

Clare

Review

I love the phthalos, but I will say that this is less reddish than the stripe swatch implies - the second bluer swatch with colour lifted back out is a better representation of this shade and having got it, I decided not go also get the GS version as there's less difference between them than I'd expected at first glance.

Clare

Review

Love this colour, and find this is one of my workhorse paints in creating complex, inky blue-blacks for painting animals and birds and midnight-tones in washes.

Clare

Review

Beautiful colour - the striped swatch is a much better representation of it than the bluer paintstroke swatch, but I do with the listings for the PrimaTeks were clearer about which ones have sparkly or shimmery qualities to them - this is one of them. Still a gorgeous paint and well worth your time, but the shimmer may rule it out of some subject matter.

Clare

Totally in love with the whole Daniel Smith Quinacridone family; this one is probably my favourite. It's a beautiful warm, luminous colour and lays down beautifully on the paper.

Clare

Review

Totally in love with the whole Daniel Smith Quinacridone family, dithered over getting this when I already have the Rose and Purple but it's delightful and I don't regret it at all.

Clare

Review

Totally in love with the whole Daniel Smith Quinacridone family, even though I don't often have much use for the pinker end of the purple spectrum, I still own several. Imagine it would be particularly prized by folk who paint florals, but I still find ample uses for it in animal, insect and aquatic life paintings.

Clare

Review

For someone who doesn't paint flowers and rarely uses pinks, I do seem drawn to them. This is a lovely shade of an often tricky colour, and can make some beautiful very light, transparent washes too, which is mostly what I find myself using it for. It's also a warm, clean addition to other colour washes when used in wet on wet and blends smoothly into other colours on the page.

Clare

Review

Lovely red, but slightly more orange-toned than the Jackson's swatch suggests; I love it and use it a lot, but it isn't filling the 'true red' spot in my mixing palette that I originally got it for.

Clare

Review

Beautiful peachy orange, serves me well as a warm mixing colour in wet on wet and has a beautiful bright and even translucence to it.

Clare

Review

About as 'primary' a yellow as you can get. I don't haven't had the experience that others have with mixing, this makes wonderful lambent greens for me, which is great because bright tones are some of the hardest ones to achieve with translucency for me, but then again, I also have a warmer yellow in my palette for mixing too - I can see how you might struggle if this were your only yellow. Makes for a smooth clean wash too.

Clare

Review

Yes, as the previous reviewer said, this is a sort of plum colour, like a light maroon. I would not call it "rose pink". It makes a nice deep natural-pink stone colour from the tube, like deep red marble. It granulates quite a bit too, so I will use it for walls, maybe certain skies, rocky landscapes, ageing leaves. It dries hard and stone-like in the palette, and takes a while to re-dissolve in water, so from the palette it seems to come out light and washy, bitty and grainy. Not the 'soft pink" described. Quite a hard colour to use, I found.

This is a must-have in my palette. It's lovely just on its own, granulates beautifully, and also mixes well with other colours to reduce their tone/chroma and make some very interesting combinations.

An extremely nice paint, from a consistently reliable brand. I paint a lot of animals and thus use lots of earth tones. I had not used Van Dyke Brown before, relying instead on a mix of black and umber. This paint gives a much fresher colour than my mixed mixed colour, although perhaps less interesting. It is also more consistent and faster to use than my own mixes. The texture when it dies is lovely.

Wow! This is a really powerful colour. On its own, a rather artificial-looking vibrant green. But it's great for mixing. I add burnt umber to knock it back a bit and make a landscape green. With Perylene Maroon it makes a really excellent black. A little goes a very long way.

Review

A useful colour for hills, vegetation. Can be dark, and then dilutes to different shades. As it dries, tiny dark granulation particles appear, which gives an interesting effect. I like it. But it's not a green for mixing, in my view. I use it on its own.

This is a highly granulating colour, which is fine if that's what you're looking for. But I found it too highly granulating to make a convincing sky. It's the right colour, but the sky isn't granulated, at least, not this much! Also I find it tricky to mix. With some colours, such as nickel titanate yellow, it doesn't mix at all, and produces an amazing multicoloured precipitate, very pretty, but not the grey/green I was hoping for. I am finding this a difficult colour to work with, and will substitute for one of the cobalt blues, I think.

Not so keen on this. The blue was okay but the golds very dull. Also, you cannot fill your palette with them as they do not 'paint' when they have dried in palette like other watercolours. Perhaps Daniel Smith should put a 'guide' with these particular paints on the best way to use them.

Review

Lovely paint but I have only given 3 stars because the colour in the tube I have bought is very different from the sample on the DS dots sample card. The sample was a definite, inky blue but the colour in the tube I've received can really only be described as a cool black. Not much point in having a sample card if they don't match up with what you buy. I would be interested to know if the Primatek colours have an inherent variation due to coming from natural mineral deposits. The good points though are that the granulation is amazing and mixing with other colours produces an interesting black, gritty overlay.

Review

I've used Winsor & Newton, Schmincke Horadam and Daler Rowney watercolours for years, but this is my first taste of Daniel Smith. There's no doubt they are much more expensive, but frankly in a different league of quality. Finely ground, the colour explodes on the paper and there's a wealth of much more interesting colours to choose from. Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet is italian tiles, rusting iron farm buildings, dying bracken - you get the idea !

Feefo

Review

Love the Daniel Smith colours but they react rather differently to other watercolours so need a bit of practice.

Feefo

Don't be misled by the colour which appears on the screen or on the Jackson's colour chart (quite a few of the DS colours are not accurately shown !). This is not the red/brown shade you see, but a lovely golden raw sienna colour. Like all DS colours it rewets very well (much better than W&N Raw Sienna or W&N Yellow Ochre) and is semi-transparent, giving a glowing colour on the paper but also having enough 'presence' to achieve interesting effects.

A very good yellow if you want to paint yellow. Strong, bright, clean. But not as good for an all in one yellow to use as yellow + mixing greens and earths. The greens are quite strong and opaque (I used PB 60 & PB 29) and look like they've been mixed using lemon yellow, because azo yellow has very little warmth. Nothing wrong with strong&opaque if you like that but I prefer more transparent. Surprisingly, the earths are quite weak. They do not have any golden glow, and they look rather cool and bland. So the need for a golden yellow arises. I used Schmincke Pure yellow before and have to say I would have been wise to stick with it, it is beautiful on its own, and mixes glowing earths and transparent natural looking greens. Pair it with DS Lemon yellow and you don't need other yellows.

I saw this product on another artist's DVD and wanted to try it. It starts off like a chrome green but then partly transforms into an other worldly electric blue if more water is added. Amazing!

Feefo

Review

This I saw on another's DVD too and on that it appeared warmer with a deep crimson/grey colour. Having tried it though it was slightly more grey than crimson but the granular quality of the paint didn't disappoint.

Love this colour: as a wash with a beautiful granulation, and also as a warmer addition to cold areas - this pigment will slightly remove the colder pigment (works wet-to-wet only of course). Yes, the pigment is light, but this makes the color so special.

The Daniel Smith swatches show it as a nice paint with some juicy midtones. In fact it's a bit muted violet with gentle glitter when dried. It feels velvety. If you know what amethyst crystals look like, this shouldn't be surprising. What impressed me is the tonal range I'm able to achieve with it. And the paint controls really nicely.

Review

Have to say the most exciting pigment to discover in 22yrs of painting. Great mixer, spectacular granulation effects, seems to ""electrify""/intensify some colours when they come into contact with it. Haven't found anything it can't do yet, just wish I had it when I first started painting -- play with it and be amazed.

Christopher Fenner

Review

Very strong pigment, lovely bright colour, can be rewetted very easily. Also great choice if you're low on your budget, hansa yellow is nice for mixing both warm and cold colors. I'm starting to believe the tube is going to last forever...

Dagmar Paseková

Review

Wonderful and intense blue, the tube is just loaded with the blue pigment! I'm not used to these tube watercolors yet (I'm working mostly with pans) so I was quite surprised how fast it settles down. The color chart says medium staining but the effect seems quite strong to me. This could work for some nice texture effects. :)

This is a gorgeous mix for background shadow passages, deepening purples in florals and special effects. The granulation is lovely - the viridian and rose pigments peek out in a wash.

Review

I love this colour as a single primary red in a very limited palette. It does a great job as a cool red in a split primary palette too, and is lovely to paint with. Very smooth and rewets well in the palette. Makes gorgeous oranges with a yellow and purples with ultramarine.

Jane Blundell

Review

Like many of the Primatek colours, you have to get used to how they work. This is a gorgeous granulating red-earth that can be used in place of Indian red. In a wash is can be glowing with dusty rose to crimson warmth but in mass-tone it is very dark. A number of colours in one. I love it.

Jane Blundell

Review

This has got to be the most glorious useful green watercolour available. It covers the range from very light but realistic mossy greens through sap greens through deep olive greens all in one tube. The granulation, with specks of browns, is gorgeous. One of the top paints I have ever used.

Jane Blundell

Review

I use this colour all the time. It is a fabulous granulating semi-opaque that is perfect for depicting rocks, beach scenes, seashells and so much more. I love it with Goethite - another granulating staple in my palette.

Jane Blundell

Review

This is my favourite yellow earth. The granulation is wonderful for beach scenes (with Buff Titanium), rocks and landscapes and I use it in place of yellow ochre or raw sienna for most of my work. Make sure you shake the tube sell though as it can separate in the tube.

A joyous paint that heavily flocculates all over the place. Rich, velvety red-brown... Has some real ooomph! while still maintaining transparency.

John Guichard

Review

I see someone else has beaten me to it! Probably a bad batch of lapis overblown with calcite and pyrite. Henceforth this paint is massively overpriced, dull, grey & weak (you'll ruin your brushes trying to get any strength of colour)... Nigh on useless! Prima-tek range seems to be an overpriced flop.

John Guichard

I must say that this colour leans much more to the green side than the sample suggests. Mine also came with a large air bubble (just my luck!). However it is a lovely colour. Easy to lift off and mixes fairly well. But

A wonderful, rich, deep green. Great granulation/flocculation effects. A must have! Maybe slightly more yellow than the picture shows. But achieves an intense dark upon layering.

I have several tubes of Daniel Smith watercolours and absolutely love them, especially the Quinacridones which are beautiful, rich colours. Quinacridone Fuchsia is a single pigment cool red, a little bluer than quin. rose in tints but not as blue as quin. magenta. At full strength it's a strong, deep reddish pink. Washes are lovely and smooth, making it perfect for floral paintings. I can also recommend the quin. gold, it's still made with the rare PO49 pigment and is the most beautiful earth colour. It's great to find a UK supplier of this wonderful range.
