Info

Aquarius is a range of artist quality watercolours made by Roman Szmal. The majority of Roman Szmal colours are single pigment paints, which ensure clean mixing and let artists easily create their own colour palettes.

Each colour is made with high quality gum arabic and glycerin, linden honey, distilled water and pure pigments. Every pan is hand filled and labelled with watercolour paper.

Colours are made in small batches that allow them to be carefully checked. Every batch is tested for performance qualities: vibrancy, flowing abilities, viscosity, colour value, transparency, granulation, undertone, tinting strength, clarity and particle size. For each colour, Roman Szmal select the perfect grind to match the particle size.

What a beautiful colour! Another colour unique to Roman Szmal's range... This and Mineral Violet are my two colours I'd recommend if you would like to try this range out! It is a joy to watch the colours separate out on wet paper. The colours are highly pigmented and a pleasure to work with! I can't wait to buy more colours from Romasn Szmal! As for the name... I will say, I had to look up the pronunciation on Google Translate!! But it is easier than you might think.

A soft and beautiful colour! This is another colour unique to Roman Szmal and I'm completely obsessed! The way colours in the pigment separate out is really exciting to watch! The name of this colour really suits... I thoroughly recommend this brand of watercolours and I will be purchasing many more colours in the very near future!

This is one of the most exciting and unusual colours in the Roman Szmal range, and the first colour I bought to try out, on account of its uniquness. I was instantly hooked, and I think I've now become obsessed with this range! The colours are all highly pigmented and are a joy to work with. The paints are made with honey, and I had heard that some of them can be rather sticky. This one certainly is quite sticky - not too much of a problem, but something to be aware of if you want to travel with a palette. I would have thought it would be worse if you lived somewhere with high humidity and heat. That being said, if you're going to pick just one of these colours to try out, you should definitely choose this one!

Such a beautiful rich colour - blue with a hint of green! These highly pigmented watercolours are very much recommended by me! I will be purchasing most of the range, over time - as money will allow. There are many unique colours that set Roman Szmal apart, and this is one of them. It also mixes beautifully with Quinacridone Gold, to make a rich gorgeous green colour!

This is a beautiful colour!! Roman Szmal paints are a joy to work with and this colour was one of my first choices to include in my new palette. Also, it mixes wonderfully with Ocean Blue to create a gorgeous rich green colour.

Love the colour and it granulates in a magical way. Some people comment on stickiness but I didn’t experience that myself.

This color is more orange in real life than the somewhat rosy brown that it shows on my monitor. Having said that, it is proving to be very useful and I'm so glad to have it. It is bright enough to use as a mix in some florals but subdued enough to use in landscapes as well. Does not rewet quite as easily as some Roman Szmal paints, but a spritz of water beforehand and you will have NO problems.

Made with single pigment (PR 102), this paint somehow manages to create a subtle two-tone effect. It's beautifully bloomy in a wet wash and responds to salting technique. Has a very pretty granulation. Rewets easily like all Roman Szmal paints I've tried.

This cobalt blue is gorgeous. It is a warmer blue in real life than it shows on my monitor. Very similar to ultramarine blue. Moves nicely in a wet-on-wet application -- doesn't bloom all over the place but also doesn't just sit there. The granulation is so beautiful. Like all of the Roman Szmal paints I've tried, it rewets easily. If you love blue and you love granulation, you'll probably love this paint.

This color is so powerful that it will probably take me a long time to use up one pan! Just touch a wet brush to it and you'll come away with lots of bright color. It's good for glazing because it is both transparent and staining. Good for color mixing, but if you need to lift your mix off the paper, there's a good chance you'll be left with a yellow stain.

I ordered a few of the Roman Szmal paints just to try, and fell in love and ordered a whole palette’s worth! This was one of the first colours I ordered, as I was looking for a cool transparent red. I love the packaging of these paints - it’s a small detail, but they are very easy to unwrap and there is minimal plastic, aside from the pan itself. I’ve found the transparency and staining information on the paints to be pretty accurate, which feels like a rarity. There is a large enough range for me to create a palette of only semi- and fully- transparent colours, which I am thrilled about. They rewet very easily. I don’t think I could store my palette on it’s side in case humidity and honey in the paint causes them to slide around, but other than that, these are absolutely perfect, in particular for the price. I’ve been using these in my professional work for a few months and have had no issues at all.

One of the most beautiful browns I've ever had a pleasure painting with. It's rich and behaves like a professional quality paint - often browns can be very telling of the brand's quality. Don't let the low price suggest that this brown is yet another streaky mess. It's a steal.

Really pretty colour-separating granulating colour - a bit like DS's Moonglow and other separating neutrals. A little bit stickier than the other Roman Szmal paint I own, but not super gloopy either. Love it!

Really lovely convenience green! It goes down as a muted sap green with some lovely subtle separation and granulation, and because it's quite dark to begin with you can get a lot of light/dark values out of the same paint. The paint itself is also very easy to re-wet without being sticky or gooey, and is packaged really nicely. Postage and customer service was great, as always.

I don't usually use convenience greens. I find Sap and Hookers tend to look un-natural and flat. But I have found the Aquarius green much more convincing. It is both subtle and granulating and a far more realistic landscape green.

This is a favourite yellow of mine and the Aquarius version of it is excellent. It doesn't have the strong brownish cast when applied at full strength that other brands have so makes cleaner, brighter mixes than them and at a good price too.

As a landscape painter I use lots of earths and this one is amazing. It is a cool shade with none of the orange tones I dislike, is very transparent, granulates gently, lays down evenly and lifts well. I must own at least ten other varieties of Raw Umber which have cost far more and like far less than this one. The pan also rewets easily without scrubbing at it. For painters who wish to emulate the classic style of watercolour this is a perfect shade.
