Competition Rules, Terms & Conditions
The competition is open to all artists of any age, ability or nationality. One entry per person. Artworks must be submitted by the artist who created them. Your artwork must be 2D.
Botanical Illustration emphasises the depiction of accurate and scientific botanical information. Submitted works should be completed in a realistic painting style that captures the anatomical and functional aspects of a plant during its life cycle. While we will accept works that experiment with composition, the plant’s structure should be the focus of the work rather than a sense of narrative.
Entries can be painted from life or from photos; please make sure you use your own photos or that you have permission to use your reference photo. Entries painted from instructional manuals or online courses are admissible, but are unlikely to be chosen for our shortlist.
While we expect the majority of entries will be executed in watercolour or watercolour pencils on white paper, we will also be accepting works in watercolour, gouache, coloured pencil, graphite, charcoal, pastel, oil and acrylic, as well as entries on toned paper. Sculpture, installations and performance pieces are not admissible. Drawings, paintings or prints of an inappropriate or offensive subject matter will be removed from the competition.
Please submit straight-on images of your work and ensure your image is cropped to include only the painting. Images that contain the art work’s frame, mount, the wall or the floor will be disqualified automatically. Images with watermarks, copyright signs or stamps on them will not be eligible. The image needs to be a .jpg at least 800 pixels wide. The better the photo, the better your chances.
First Prize, chosen from the shortlist by our judge, Sandra Wall Armitage SBA: a Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour Deluxe Chelsea Box Set donated by Winsor & Newton.
2 People's Choice Awards, chosen from the shortlist by public vote: a Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour Lightweight Metal Sketchers Box of 12 Tubes donated by Winsor & Newton.
Entries are accepted from the 7th - 18th October 2017.
The shortlisted candidates will be announced on the 22nd October 2017.
The public vote begins on 22nd August and closes on the 28th October 2017.
Winners will be announced on the 29th October 2017.
