Daniel Smith : Primatek Watercolour Paint : 15ml : Lapis Lazuli Genuine : Series 5
Lapis Lazuli Genuine is a subtle blue-grey with a slight reflective quality and three-dimensional effect. This glittering pyrite paint is completely unlike synthetic ultramarine blues. Mined in South America, Daniel Smith's lapis lazuli is of gemstone quality and represents 80% of a tube's contents (the rest composed of a natural binder).
ASTM Lightfastness Rating: Excellent
Transparency: Transparent
Granulating: Yes
Staining: Non-staining
Daniel Smith's goal is to make the painting process as memorable as your finished masterpiece. Daniel Smith have spent eighteen years developing the finest and most complete line of watercolour paint so you can create your own unique vision.
PrimaTek Watercolours are made from minerals, often semi precious minerals, that have been ground into pigments, mixed with gum arabic (the binder) and milled into PrimaTek Watercolours. The first was Lapis Lazuli Genuine in 1998, since then, many more have been added such as Amethyst Genuine, Piemontite Genuine and Serpentine Genuine. Most of these colours have wonderful granulating effects that some artists have called 'magical'.
This is a 15ml tube of Daniel Smith Primatek Watercolour Paint in Lapis Lazuli Genuine.

Very difficult to re-wet. Mostly a dark, sticky paint which doesn't spread or mix well. Very muted in colour. It's not a pretty blue, in that you have to settle out the paint yourself and probably lose the binders in the process, to remove the heavy, dark particles to achieve any of the pale, clear blue (in the image here. The swatch image implies that the pale, clean blue is the majority particle, but it is very much in the minority, and even washed in this way, most of the particles would not be this colour. In fact it is mostly grey and a dark, opaque, cold, grey-black, not warm blue. I've tried to use it to enrich mixes, or use it for quality dark blue, but it has dispersal problems. It's going to take a bit of practice to use this one. I think it'll work more as a novelty than as a paint picked for a specific effect. Very pale colour and uneven when I used it. (Posted on 28/04/2019)Rating - Review by Feefo
not as strong lapis colour as expected. (Posted on 16/03/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo

After lusting after this colour I was really, really disappointed with it. In fact hardly any colour more a granular watery grey blue than the bright blue I expected. Not worth paying the extra almost double price. Most disappointing experience. Would be interesting to try the test card first. (Posted on 20/08/2015)Rating - Review by John Guichard
I see someone else has beaten me to it! Probably a bad batch of lapis overblown with calcite and pyrite. Henceforth this paint is massively overpriced, dull, grey & weak (you'll ruin your brushes trying to get any strength of colour)... Nigh on useless! Prima-tek range seems to be an overpriced flop.
