A newly released DVD ‘Making Woodblock Prints’ is an educational film taught by master printmakers Merlyn Chesterman RE and Rod Nelson. It follows on from their popular book of the same title published in 2015.
Filmed on location in Merlyn’s studio on the North Devon coast, this two hour workshop covers nine topics, from essential tools to advanced techniques. It is both instructive and hugely inspiring.

I found this dvd very useful, with methods and techniques explained in a clear and straightforward way. As the student, you are encouraged to experiment with making expressive lines and marks with the tools, and they use a registration technique that is different to the traditional Japanese kento method, which I was interested to see. It was a pleasure to observe the way they approach the production of their own beautiful works - including colour gradation and handling extra-large paper sizes. (Posted on 27/10/2021)Rating
