Handover Whiting is a neutral calcium carbonate ground to a fine powder, used in gesso, traditional paints like distemper, and as a substitute for pounce powder. A common gesso recipe is 25% whiting, 25% rabbit skin glue, and 50% water. In intaglio printmaking, whiting is used for plate wiping and degreasing, mixed with ammonia or white vinegar to remove dirt and greasy marks without abrasion before applying acid-resistant grounds.
