Dalon is a remarkable man-made imitation of natural sable hair. Each Dalon filament is extruded to a point, just like natural hair, and construction of the brush head is meticulously hand crafted with exactly the same care and attention as the sable brush it is intended to rival. Dalon s high resilience and durability ensures excellent shape retention and long life in use with oils, water colors and acrylics alike. Dalon is an alternative to sable at a fraction of the cost.

For many years this was my main watercolour wash brush. It has been well used and (a little) abused but still works pretty much as it did when I got it. The fibres have plenty of spring and it still holds a good shape today, the only frustration has been water capacity - on 15x11 Bockingford it doesnt seem to hold enough paint for me. Maybe a 1"" would work better. So why 3 stars? Well when I went looking for a replacement/upgrade I was amazed how close in performance the Royal Taklon wash brushes were for a lot less money. It would seem synthetic brushes have improved a lot over the years and Dalon isnt top dog any more. For a budget/novice synthetic brush, Taklons are amazing value but I wanted something better which lead me to try Pro Arte Prolene (and Prolene plus), Jacksons Synthetic and finally Pro Arte Synthetic Sable Blend. All of these out performed the Dalon in some respect, for me the best direct alternative would be the Pro Arte Prolene (or Prolene Plus for a couple of pounds more) they offer better performance for similar prices. I just hope they hold their shape as well

This brush has been my main watercolour brush for years, it has had plenty of use and a little abuse too but still works really well. While I have explored other flat brushes (and do have a soft spot for Hake/Goat brushes) the Dalon D88 is just such a great all rounder, used by everyone from beginner to professional - if you enjoy watercolour and havent already got one then you should try one of theseIt has a lot of spring and will return to shape really easily. It is also excellent for putting in line details etc. The 3/4"" suits my smaller watercolours (10x14) but I do sometime wish it held more water especially on larger papersMy only criticism is that after many years use the laquer on the handle is now cracking quite badly. For the very reasonable price I will probably buy another and pass my old one to my kids who are just starting out in watercolour
