Info

Caran d’Ache Luminance colored pencils are the most lightfast of all colored pencils meeting the highest of international standards: ASTM D-6901.

With solid leads and a wide range of colors created from highly concentrated pigments, they have been made for professional level work. The velvet finish of these pencils has come from two years of technical research which also developed the richness of the shades and allows for overlaying, mixing and gradation.

Caran d'Ache won the innovation prize 2010 of the SMAC (Fair of the creative professions and activities) with its Luminance 6901 color pencil.

These are just superb.

I first saw these pencils being used in a YouTube demonstration, and decided to buy a selection suitable for portraiture. Jackson's sell the individual colours, allowing personal choice from the one hundred colours on the Caran D'Ache chart. In use, the colours are smooth and easy to apply. The leads are softer than my other favourite pencils, those of Faber-castell Polychromos but they sharpen easily with a hand sharpener and do not have a tendency to break or crumble when a finer point is created. Once on the paper, the colours blend together easily and are responsive both to dry spreading with, say, a torchon, and also to solvent or blender application. A very useful aspect of the colour range is the inclusion of some percentage colour pencils alongside the full colour, allowing delicate tints to be applied. Yes, they are expensive but my suggestion is to select a range of colours rather than purchasing ready-made sets. That way, you can tailor your requirements to the kind of art you prefer without taking out a loan. In summary, if you like the very best, you will like these pencils.
