PrimaTek Watercolors are made from minerals, often semi precious minerals, that have been ground into pigments, mixed with gum arabic (the binder) and milled into PrimaTek Watercolors. The first was Lapis Lazuli Genuine in 1998, since then, many more have been added such as Amethyst Genuine, Piemontite Genuine and Serpentine Genuine. Most of these colors have wonderful granulating effects that some artists have called 'magical'.
This is a 15ml tube of Daniel Smith Primatek Watercolor Paint in Sodalite Genuine.

I purchased a Sodalite 15-mL tube and a Sodalite watercolor stick in 2011, and recently took them out of storage. At the time, Sodalite was one of my absolute favorite colors. Dried tube paint that I squeezed into a half pan on my palette, the watercolor stick, and the paint in the sealed 15-mL tube all changed color from a beautiful dark blue to black. Fortunately, paintings I made using this color in 2011 still look blue, or at least much bluer than the paint's current hue. I know that 12 years is a long time to store paint, and I highly doubt they were in optimal storage conditions, but I haven't experienced this with any other paint, Daniel Smith or otherwise. I haven't had any issue with the other tubes of paint or watercolor sticks that were stored in the same box under the same conditions. I'm not sure why this pigment changed color, or if it was part of a bad batch that affected both tube and stick paint, but I don't trust it anymore. I'm concerned that if I use it in a painting, heat or humidity or whatever caused the pigment to change color might also happen to my paintings. It's not worth the potential heartbreak to me.

Lovely paint but I have only given 3 stars because the colour in the tube I have bought is very different from the sample on the DS dots sample card. The sample was a definite, inky blue but the colour in the tube I've received can really only be described as a cool black. Not much point in having a sample card if they don't match up with what you buy. I would be interested to know if the Primatek colours have an inherent variation due to coming from natural mineral deposits. The good points though are that the granulation is amazing and mixing with other colours produces an interesting black, gritty overlay.

You cannot fault these colours.

I have only had one issue with a ceramic palette that was damaged in the post which was replaced with no problem and everything else I have purchased has been excellent value and excellent quality
