Info

News update: Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper has had a slight texture change. This will be of interest to artists who choose it for its ultra smooth surface.

Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper is mould made and is produced with 100% cotton. It is chlorine and acid free, guaranteeing long conservation and inalterability over time. The paper is sized both internally and externally, making it ideally absorbent and retaining its nature unaltered even if scratched. This paper is traditional white, without optical bleaching.

Fabriano Artistico watercolor papers have two deckle edges and are watermarked ‘FABRIANO+ARTISTICO’ on the short grain side. The high quality and ample offer of this paper satisfies the requirements of all professional artists and the most demanding amateurs.

Ideal for watercolor, tempera, gouache, acrylic, ink, charcoal, graphite and drawing. It is also suitable for printmaking.

We offer a paper cutting service on all our watercolor papers. To cut your paper to half imperial (22" x 15") or quarter imperial (11" x 15") please state this in the order comments section of the checkout process, which you will find immediately below the payment details.

Fabriano Artistico paper has changed permanently because of changes to the machine that makes it. The surface texture is a bit less smooth. The manufacturer does not believe the change is significant, they feel the paper is still within their allowed parameters. But a number of artists have found the change significant enough that it interferes with their work. They are usually artists who make very precise work and need to be able to control fine lines, so most often botanical artists using watercolor or colored pencil. Since we have made customers aware of the changes to this paper, please be aware that if you wish to return the paper to us you will need to pay the postage costs for the return.

This paper can be excellent and it can be rubbish. The paper is very inconsistent. When it performs well, it is one of the best papers around. When it performs badly, it is a highly frustrating experience. It is impossible to tell whether you've got a good sheet or a bad sheet before you start painting, by which time you've spent an hour doing a drawing, which is then wasted. Blocks and loose sheets show the same problem. Different sheets in the same block can perform very differently. Personally I think the problem is due to inconsistent sizing. Some years ago the sizing was changed from gelatin to pva. The experts at Fabriano say they cannot investigate unless I provide serial numbers, but of course the blocks don't have serial numbers and the only way to get a serial number for loose sheets is to buy a pack of 10 sheets, which is not a risk I am willing to take. With bad sheets, the paint doesn't seem to go down as smoothly, as if the paper is resisting the paint. The paint often dries unevenly with nasty water marks. With good sheets, the paint goes down smoothly and there are no nasty watermarks. The difference might be a bit subtle for some people, but if you use this paper a lot you will soon learn the difference.
