Very interesting palette; colours glow on hot press paper
I started my watercolour journey last year with Sennelier and have been playing with a primary triad for my skin tones, so I found QoR very intriguing and decided on this set as a complement to my very limited palette (I expect my QoR paints to push my Sen' around and produce very interesting effects) At first, when I read on the packaging "broudeaux" as a French translation for crimson, I thought I had gotten a knock off and was very worried for a minute, but I checked and it is indeed the official wording (Golden, please correct it or this might lead other consumers to have heart issues considering the high price). I really really love the box (the wells are such a great idea!) but the tube holders made of cardboard bring down the value a little bit; I don't mind though and am thinking of glueing small magnets on the tube caps to hold them in place; let's see! (I read the advice somewhere that paint springs out of the QoR tubes; I would definitely recommend to use a toothpick to pick the least amount of paint when the tubes are new in order to minimize waste - though said paint is high quality and can always be reactivated) I first played around with the colours using very little pigments on mid quality cellulose paper and was very little impressed; when I switched to my Arches Hot press cotton paper however, the colours just started glowing in the most beautiful way! Golden claims that the aquazol binder allows for more pigments; I hoped it would mean I would need less paint to achieve a similar effect as my Sen' but haven't found this to be true for now. (But Sen' are really good, so maybe that's why). However I need very, very little paint to achieve Ali Cavanaugh's very subtle skin tone recipes, so I might use less than expected in the end. I definitely love the colours, and Ali's free mixing tutorial published on Golden gave me a new appreciation for the subtleties of those paints; I know I will get a lot of joy out of it! P.S.: on a side note, Jackson's Customer service is, as always, one of the best I have ever experienced. Thank you so much for your hard work and passion!
