Jackson's : Icon Sable Synthetic Brushes
A mix of tradition and modern technology, these Icon brushes represent the advancements of science combined with the classic needs of the traditional water color artist. The uniqueness of the Micro-Synthetic fibre is twofold. Firstly the fibres are treated to produce millions of tiny indentations. This increases the surface area of the hairs allowing a much greater color holding capacity for the brush. The hairs are then treated with a special process that frees the micro-synthetic fibres of any static electricity which makes brush fibres stick together. After which the hairs can smoothly and precisely react to any kind of stroke, either delicate or abrupt. By then mixing natural sable hairs we create a brush that behaves like a pure sable but at a fraction of the price.

This is my very first quill but it's now my favorite brush. I bought size 10/0 and it is perfect! Holds a ton of liquid but releases water and pigment pretty evenly for a synthetic brush. Very affordable with zero shedding. Such a great buy! (Posted on 5/5/2023)Rating - Review by Holly
I love this brush! I bought the Jackson's Raven mop in the same size (#6) last year having only ever used sable and squirrel brushes previously, as I was looking for something much bigger but without the real hair price tag. I was really disappointed with the Raven's ability to hold water, hold colour, hold a point...everything really! But this brush does everything I'd been looking for and at an even lower price tag too.Rating
It has a really lovely shape to it - the #6 brush is a real monster in size, but holds a beautiful sharp point, making it extremely versatile. The bristles are smoother than real hair, but that's to be expected from synthetics and I personally didn't mind this as the brush holds far more water (and releases it more steadily) than I'd expect from synthetic bristles. In that regard, it matches my sable and squirrel brushes easily.
I'd definitely be excited to try these brushes in the smaller sizes too - I feel they could even replace my real hair brushes eventually, and that's something I never thought I'd be saying! (Posted on 7/13/2022)- Review by Jennifer
I love Jackson's, and have bought two of their house brand brushes, but unfortunately I have been disappointed both times. I wasn't impressed with the Raven quill I got, but at least it's usable. But this 3/8" flat Icon is simply the worst watercolor brush I've ever purchased. You cannot lay down an even flat wash with it, because it is so stiff and dense, it pushes the paint to the edges. It leaves such bad brush strokes, that even excellent cotton paper cannot compensate for it. I have a flat Cotman brush (fully synthetic) that far outperforms this brush. Speaking of which, the percentage of real sable must be tiny in this brush; there's no trace of sable's feeling or performance. I would not buy another brush from this line, and sadly, I think I'll just stay away from the Jackson's brushes in the future. But that doesn't mean I won't order from them again! - Great value for the price! The smallest quill is my biggest brush. It also holds the best point, which I've been looking for. It lays down paint evenly most of the time; still getting used to water control with this brush as a beginner. (Posted on 6/20/2021)

Very nice brush, very reasonably priced. Looks to be of good quality. Holds it's point well and holds a goodly amount of water for it's size. I like it's stiffness and snap which I think is between a Princeton Neptune (Soft) and a Princeton Aqua Elite. Hope all Jackson's Icon series are this good as I plan on buying more. Rating

I am a sable brush man myself. I have a nos.14 Diana Kolinsky sable etc. and a W&N nos.12 series 7 plus many more beside. However, I was completely surprised to find this brush worked well and carried colour well with a good point and could be described as the old artists used to call their brushes a "sable pencil". The brush handle is comfortable in the handle and is well balance which is an important point. (Posted on 3/16/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo

I first tried one belonging to my art tutor, after he had recommended them to me. I was so impressed that I bought a set of round brushes, 2,4 6,8,10, and 12, and have never looked back.Rating
They hold a generous amount of paint, are a pleasure to hold, and the bristles retain their shape, after cleaning. Because of the fine points on the brushes, painting intricate shapes is made easier.
I have no hesitation in recommending these brushes to colleagues in my painting groups, and I know some of them have purchased a number of brushes. Real value for money. (Posted on 5/16/2016)- Review by Feefo

I just tried this out because I had this on last minute deal. It looks super hard when dry but is soft when wet. Retains its shape so you're able to make detailed strokes and spread the colors evenly. When loaded with large amount of water each strokes will have the wet in wet look - and I really love this effect! Great for loose techniques and also gives you more control when painting in wet-in-wet! (Posted on 8/20/2015)Rating - Review by Feefo

Really pleased with my purchases, always difficult when you can’t see the goods, the paper has excellent absorbtion, I did one of my best skies ever last week ! The brushes have a good point and worked well , thankyou (Posted on 6/28/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo
Good substitute for 100% sable. Good precise brush for small scale work. Holds its point well. (Posted on 6/28/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo
The Quill Watercolour Brush is a big brush but surprisingly light, well made and lovely to use! Thank you, I shall certainly buy from Jackson's again and recommend them to friends. (Posted on 5/16/2018)Rating - Review by Evelyn
This is a beautiful brush. It hold lots of pigment and water and maintains it's shape and lovely fine point. It is superb value for money and I will definitely buy more Jackson's sable & synthetic quill brushes (Posted on 4/19/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo
As usual this item is of good quality and fit for purpose. (Posted on 3/27/2018)Rating - Review by Rosario

Mixed about this. I like the size and water capacity but shape is a bit off. Doesn't look cut to an even point. (Posted on 1/19/2018)Rating - Review by Avantika
This brush is amazing! Has a good water holding capacity and precise point. Great value for money. (Posted on 1/11/2018)Rating - Review by Avantika

Excellent brush. Bought the #4, now buying #0.Good water/paint holding and enough spring to make them very useful. (Posted on 7/24/2017)Rating - Review by Wendy
A wonderful brush. The bristles have a nice point when wet and snaps back to a point. The wood handle feels light and cheap, so be careful with it. (Posted on 6/30/2017)Rating - Review by Maroun
A very good brush, worth more than its price. Holds a great deal of water and comes to a fairly thin point. What really made it for me was the light weight of the brush and the texture of the handle, a joy to use. (Posted on 6/8/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
These mix brushes are wonderful. They have a slight spring but still hold a lot of water or paint. The quality is excellent, especially if you look at the price. Well worth it. (Posted on 4/13/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
Great brush just what I needed and good price (Posted on 3/29/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
Great brush! Much better than my previous mop ( different brand)which constantly lost hairs every time I used it. Has a nice quality feel to and a great point. Would highly recommend! (Posted on 3/22/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
I needed a big sable but couldn't justify the price. This brush fulfills my need, it's obviously not pure sable but is great to paint with. I have a couple of the large 777's as well and they are just as nice to use. A great bang for your buck! (Posted on 3/16/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
Nice brush (Posted on 3/16/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo

The Jacksons Icon Sable Synthetic brush I bought has been exceptionally nice to use, I've always used Sable brushes, but having moved onto body colour for a brief spell, I was reluctant to use my Sable brushes and found the Icon brush really good. I intend buying more very shortly. (Posted on 3/16/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
good quality (Posted on 3/16/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
A really good brush - very similar to a sable but considerably cheaper (Posted on 3/16/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
Too early to say more (Posted on 3/16/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
More springy than a pure squirrel quill, more floppy than a sable. Definitely an interesting brush with a needle point tip and a nice handle. (Posted on 3/16/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
These are really nice brushes, just the thing for watercolour painting. (Posted on 3/16/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo

good (Posted on 3/16/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
I am a sable brush man myself. I have a nos.14 Diana Kolinsky sable etc. and a W&N nos.12 series 7 plus many more beside. However, I was completely surprised to find this brush worked well and carried colour well with a good point and could be described as the old artists used to call their brushes a "sable pencil". The brush handle is comfortable in the handle and is well balance which is an important point. (Posted on 3/16/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
Great brush...put to use already. (Posted on 11/30/2016)Rating - Review by Feefo
I ordered this brush to make up my own order. However, I have this brush and love it. It feels comfortable in the hand and handles well with watercolour. Jackson's Icon brushes are superb brushes and well worth having around when working. I use Jackson's brushes. They are excellent value and a credit to the company.

It's ok but a lot firmer than I expected. Not as intuitive as expected. (Posted on 8/28/2015)Rating - Review by Julia Ovchinnikova
It's a great brush! It is no different from the brush of sable - the same soft, perfectly holds water and paint, multifunctional and incredibly easy to use! (Posted on 8/20/2015)Rating - Review by Chris Alves
These have to be the bargain of the year. Great brush, slightly stiffer than pure sable, holds loads of paint and a nice gradual release. Have 4, 6 & 12 plus 2 quills 4 & 10/0. Really very nice to use and a steal at this price. (Posted on 8/20/2015)Rating - Review by Chris Alves
A very nice brush indeed. Stiffer than sable but lovely to use especially at this price. Would be great for a beginning painter. (Posted on 8/20/2015)Rating - Review by Chris Alves
Fantastically precise point, well balanced handle and an absolute treat to use. I have two of these Jacksons synthetic quills and will buy a couple more. I use them more than I use my sables. (Posted on 8/20/2015)Rating - Review by Chris Alves
A really great brush, beautifully made and wonderful to use. Good snap and holds loads of paint. I use it more than my sables. (Posted on 8/20/2015)Rating - Review by Sharlie Tang
Excellent service. Have been using Jacksons for years. (Posted on 8/11/2015)Rating - Review by Feefo
