Quality as expected, ideal for quick sketches, not useful for watercolour as paper not meant for this. Lovely tidy sketchbooks and grandchildren liked them to use as sketch diaries for which they were intended.

I've long been a fan of the 9x14cm pocket notebook, but not all the options in that form factor are art-friendly or even pen friendly. So I was very pleasantly surprised by the Royal Talens Art Creation hardback sketchbook. The paper is a useful weight (140gsm) – heavier than writing paper but not so thick as to feel like light card. It has no printed lines, obviously, but you can make out lines on a guide sheet underneath if you want to use it as notebook. And the surface is versatile: absolutely fountain pen friendly, with no feathering or bleeding and negligible ghosting, and lovely with brush pens as well as graphite and colour pencils. Aquarelle pencils work nicely, although this is definitely paper for a light wash rather than fluid, multilayer watercolour. (Care is needed with brush pens that use dye-based rather than pigment inks: too heavy or saturated an application might bleed very slightly.) The binding seems well done and the book lies flat with reasonable ease, although I've not been using it long enough to test how durable the binding will be. The cover sturdy without being too thick or heavy, and it’s covered in the familiar "moleskine" material. Just two minor negatives, although not enough to lose a star: there's no pocket inside the back cover (you could always add your own), and the paper colour is definitely on the creamy side as opposed to white or milky/traditional white. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this as a versatile book that could work in an EveryDay Carry kit as a combined sketchbook and notebook, especially if you like to sketch in ink and/or pencil and perhaps add the occasional light wash for tone or colour. And the price is simply excellent.
