Silver Brush Black Velvet brushes are made from a blend of Squirrel hair and a new type of synthetic filament called Risslon. Because they are blended, these premium short-handled brushes possess the durability and spring of a synthetic brush, and the liquid-holding capacity of a squirrel mop, making them a great investment. They are designed for use with water-based paint; principally watercolor, inks, dyes and silk-painting.
The black Risslon filaments are mounted in black ferrules. The end of the sleek black handle is bevelled and can be used for burnishing and scraping.

The Black Velvet brushes are my absolute favorite for watercolor and ink. With a nice point, I find these are a great substitute for the more expensive large sized kolinsky sable rounds. They hold a lot of liquid and distribute water evenly onto cotton and cellulose papers. Squirrel hair makes for a softer brush so don't expect the firm snap of a full synthetic like golden taklon...thought I'd mention this since many artists are not fans of soft brushes. I own many sizes in the Black Velvet line and I purchase new ones whenever I can afford to. Looking forward to trying out the Dagger and Rigger brushes next. Not a fan of the Silver Brush Black Velvet line. I bought a few of these along with Princeton's Velvet Touch brushes for watercolor but didn't like either. The black barrel and ferrel of these brushes makes it easy to not notice if paint or water has travelled up the brush. The hairs hold a decent amount of water, but if you're looking for natural hair brushes, don't settle for these. The handle of these brushes feels cheap and weren't comfortable to hold. Excellent brush - carries a lot of water and pigment and has good release. Can come to quite a fine point when wet. It handles like a mop when wet, definitely does not have the 'springiness' that synthetic or sable/sable blends/synthetic have - but this is a squirrel brush and a really nice one at that.Rating
