With both internal and surface sizing, these papers have exceptional wet strength that supports the application of multiple washes. Similarly, just as the paper's sizing retards water absorption, pigment stays on the surface of the sheet. The result: remarkably glowing color.
Stillman & Birn bindings are equally rugged. The hardbound bindings - stiff when new - are designed to be broken in. The spines get eased in and then lay completely flat, accomodating both two-page drawing layouts and flatbed scanning.
Bound in the United States, this sketchbook system offers artists a choice of three paper surfaces:
• Vellum – distinctive tooth, suitable for all dry media, and will also accept multiple washes
• Cold Press – Substantial tooth, enhanced wet and tear strength, suitable for multi-media artwork
• Smooth – Suitable for pen & ink, colored pencils, water-based markers as well as watercolors

I am a big fan of Stillman and Birn sketchbooks and the beta hardcover ones are my favourite. I particularly like the very white paper which handles watercolour very well.

I really like this sketchbook, for all the reasons already stated by previous customers. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the thread used to bind the pages not being waxed. I assumed it must be, in such a quality sketchbook, and now I have dark blue, that spread through the thread during a heavy wash, up until the middle of the sketchbook. I hope Stillman & Birn can fix this in the future.

Gorgeous and will be buying more. Fantastic quality paper and the fact that it is stitched is a huge plus as the sheets don't drift apart as with other sketchbooks. I am currently working on a project to paint the hill I view from my sitting room throughout the year and wanted this size so am delighted with this product.

These are very fine sketchbooks perfect for any watercolor artist. Strong binding, they lay easily flat.Paper is seized so they can accept also heavy washes without any warping.Excellent also for writing and lettering if you like the textured surface.You will be not disappointed!

This has got to be the best quality watercolour sketchbook ever and after checking, Jackson's have the best price in the UK. I love the way the book stays opened flat to enable painting across two pages and also the firm stitching throughout the book. A quality item, for sure!

Paper quality as I hoped: very good. Nicely bound. Feel sturdy. Just wish companies found alternative packaging to plastics.
