Info
Enhanced wet strength suitable for mixed media renderings.
Paper shade: Natural white.
Surface: Rough.
Sheet count: 26 sheets/52 pages.
With both internal and surface sizing, these papers have exceptional wet strength that supports the application of multiple washes. Similarly, just as the paper's sizing retards water absorption, pigment stays on the surface of the sheet. The result: remarkably glowing color.
Stillman & Birn bindings are equally rugged. The hardbound bindings - stiff when new - are designed to be broken in. The spines get eased in and then lay completely flat, accomodating both two-page drawing layouts and flatbed scanning.
Bound in the United States, this sketchbook system offers artists a choice of three paper surfaces:
• Vellum – distinctive tooth, suitable for all dry media, and will also accept multiple washes
• Cold Press – Substantial tooth, enhanced wet and tear strength, suitable for multi-media artwork
• Smooth – Suitable for pen & ink, colored pencils, water-based markers as well as watercolors

After years of using Moleskine and Pink Pig sketchbooks I was after a sketchbook that would be able to cope with whatever media I wanted to throw at it, to a reasonable standard. The paper quality is very good and pigments look radiant when using watercolours. While this isn't watercolour paper I find that it comfortably handles several glazes, but any more than that the paper starts to pill. It's lovely paper for both acrylic and gouache, and I have used pencil and pastel on it with good results (though it isn't toothy enough for a lot of pastel). I have found that use of any wet media, even quite dry, will cause the page to dry with light buckling. I recommend Googling for instructions on how to break the spine of these books, once done they can be laid open flat. I believe this sketchbook is a great all-rounder for mixed media.

I previously bought one of these sketchbooks and was a bit wary of using it as it is fairly expensive. However, a little while ago I started using it as my main sketching book. I do so enjoy it now I have had a decent time to evaluate. I particularly like the heavy duty paper and the way it is designed to crack and flatten at the spine. The paper texture particularly suits my regular use of pen but is also very expressive with pencil. Watercolour (as colour notes) sits well although I wouldn't try to do a regular watercolour picture on this paper. I might get brave one day and try one of the other variants supplied by Stillman and Bird.

Good sketchbook for on the road sketching and watercolor

A beautiful sketchbook. Just owning it, untouched, is almost enough. I am reluctant to use it for my imperfect work but use it I will!

Firstly, I WOULDN'T buy another one. After all the hype I bought two types. I have used many different types of sketchbook, and these are good BUT NO WAY exceptional, in fact STRATHMORE VISUAL JOURNALS also sold by Jacksons beat them hands down, and I have done a side by side comparison test. Nicely bound and presented, lay flat, the paper is decent wood pulp and well sized and looks like board. They are good for travel, outdoors, etc. The paint sits on the surface if unmolested and shines, particularly quinacridones, good but not exceptional.

Have always used moleskine water colour books but tried one of these on recommendation. Far superior product. The paper takes ink and watercolour fantastically. The moleskine paper can sometimes get a bit oily and reject water. I also prefer the more square format of the two page spread on the beta. The stillman is perfect for my needs.

Excellent sketchbooks at 270gsm and I am so glad that Jackson's are now stocking these items. It would be great if we could get US Letter size sketchbooks as well, in the UK as I find that US Letter is a much more useable size than A4, with the extra width and slightly less height.
