With both internal and surface sizing, these papers have exceptional wet strength that supports the application of multiple washes. Similarly, just as the paper's sizing retards water absorption, pigment stays on the surface of the sheet. The result: remarkably glowing color.
Stillman & Birn bindings are equally rugged. The hardbound bindings - stiff when new - are designed to be broken in. The spines get eased in and then lay completely flat, accomodating both two-page drawing layouts and flatbed scanning.
Bound in the United States, this sketchbook system offers artists a choice of three paper surfaces:
• Vellum – distinctive tooth, suitable for all dry media, and will also accept multiple washes
• Cold Press – Substantial tooth, enhanced wet and tear strength, suitable for multi-media artwork
• Smooth – Suitable for pen & ink, colored pencils, water-based markers as well as watercolors

Good quality cover keeps pages flat. Paper is a good weight to take watercolour washes for sketching and is a lovely surface to draw on.

A good sketch book.......

If you like Pen-and-Wash sketching these are the best sketchbooks going though not cheap. The paper is beautiful to draw, paint or whatever, takes water without a wrinkle and handy to carry. I've tried various sizes both smaller and larger and this one suits me best. Currently in Istria, Croatia where sketching is a pleasure

A great little sketch book. Really nice, portable size. Very impressed by the paper - I've used it with wet media and it holds up well.

This is a superb sketchbook if you are doing slow patient work. (I am making detailed colour studies of small things) The paper holds a lot of watercolour paint, you can do fully saturated colours just fine but you have to build it up slowly and be controlled with your washes. It's not the most deliciously fun surface to paint on, doesn't give you great granulation etc. but it does give back your colours absolutely faithfully when they dry which is unusual in a sketchbook. You can paint on both sides too. Takes ink, graphite, a good deal of rubbing out; makes for very clean work and doen't fudge your details. Nice firm backboards, sits solidly on a desk while you are working and doesn't move around. Wire doesn't unravel if you cart it around in your handbag every day like I do. Great quality paper, if you do something you like you can snip it out and stick it in a frame and sell to a collector if that's the sort of thing you do. I love its squarish shape and compact size too. Ideal for botanical illustration, agree with other reviewer it is not the book to take out for urban sketching.

In was excited to try out this much praised US journal but was quite disappointed. The paper is indeed smooth and to me is like thick Bristol paper. It does NOT take washes well and you have to work lightly with watercolours otherwise it will quickly buckle. It also does not take many layers well. The good thing is that nothing bled through to the page.I tried sketching with soft, B graphite pencils and found it difficult to blend the graphite on the page using a tortillon. The paper erases well but is too smooth even coloured pencil blending.Perhaps this journal is ideal for ink illustrations and Pan Pastels. The wire binding gets in the way. It is bulky and very uncomfortable to hold in your hand as the wire hurt my hand after holding the book for a short while and you need to hold this book firmly as it is quite heavy. Not the ideal art journal if you are an urban sketcher . I keep this journal in a drawer when not in use and the corners are already stubbed. There aren't really many pages in this journal, either. Perhaps because the paper is thicker. In my opinion it's over priced and not practical. The paper is very limited and there are MUCH better and more economical journals on the market . It looks well made and expensive but not very practical.
