I spent time reading the reviews before buying Stillman & Birn Beta sketchbooks of which there are 5 choices in the series and I'd say previous reviews are pretty spot on. Enjoying without disappointment my new sketchbook using a variety of mediums.

I am actually very pleased with sketchbook. Nicely made. Paper takes 1-2 light washes, which is enough for sketching, dries good. Needs a bit of time to get used to it. Good value.

My favourite sketchbooks - great for all media.

Nice sketchbook, hadn't quite appreciated slight difference in 'right' side and 'wrong' side of paper due to format (how pages are folded) which probably won't be noticeable most mediums, but is if drawing say feathers with hard graphite. So won't buy again regretfully.

I expect high but totally disappointed. This Beta version can only accept dry media, dry brush watercolor or watercolor marker(I haven't tried yet, it may bleed through possibly). I agree with the comment from Galerie JS above, the paper looks like cartridge, no tooth at all. When applying paint on it, a feeling as if you are applying paints on cartridge paper. In short, definitely for dry media only. I will not recommend this journal for artists who do want to do watercolor "painting".

I have been searching for this item for a few months now and was delighted to find that my favourite art supplier had it in stock. Ideal for mixed media, especially a lot of watercolour.

Very good sketchbooks, and this heavier weight paper is my preference, ideal for pen and wash. Jacksons stock a good range of these sketchbooks.

Sadly I'm a bit disappointed. I watched a lot of Youtubers using the stillmann& Birn Beta Sketchbooks for watercolor and swatching. It seemed perfectly fine for my intended use. But it turns out that this book can't deal well with water. It is more like normal Cardstock paper. Soaks up all the water and color in seconds, like a sponge. If you try to rewet the paper or intend to go over certain areas more than twice the paper starts peeling and flaking. Like that wasn't enough you can't see any texture or granulation of the colors. They just look flat. Even colors like "Grenn Apatite Genuine" from Daniel Smith becoma boring and lifeless, when in fact they are beautiful, interesting, multi-faceted and highly granulating colors. The Binding of the book though is really nice and I really like the size and format of this.

High quality sketchbook with thick paper.

Smooth paper, though the book does start to lose its shape when use. This is due to the thickness of the paper, and can be stopped via an elastic band.

If Stillman & Birn produced this landscape sketchbook in a hard cover version I would prefer it but the soft cover one is nice. The beta paper takes pen and watercolour very well and I particularly like painting across two pages.

A bit disappointed. Size is OK, cover is not as expected (thinner), paper is rather extra white but the paper is not really suitable for watercolour. The water stagnates on the surface and reacts very oddly. Strange because the paper in my other Alpha sketchbook (hard bound) seems to not do that. So, just good enough for sketches and maybe mixing attempts but in no way helpful for preparatory works as the pigments will not interact correctly.

This sketchbook has good quality paper that handles a variety of media quite well - watercolour, ink, gouache etc.

It is a great size and the paper quality is amazing but the cover creases a little due to the binding and it attracts dirt - but I'm sure of you took greater care of it you'd be okay.

I'm not sure what it is... but my watercolour brushes don't seem to work well with this paper. I was to love this sketchbook - because I love the colour. But alas... I'll stick with the Beta instead.

I love this sketchbook. Just love it. I go through 3 of these a month... and they never let me down. I can use a lot of water and do layers of colour and it never pills. Great product! (to keep it closed I use an elastic band)

I use my sketchbooks to create watercolour portraits and I find that this paper doesn't stand up to much at all when it comes to water or markers. Lots of pilling. I recommend using the other 270 gsm Stillman & Birn sketchbooks for watercolour. ;) Otherwise... it is a great sketchbook.

Paper takes multiple pieces very well, even alcohol markers don't show a huge amount of bleed. They still go through the page, but not nearly as much as with other brands. The paper is very sturdy, and took multiple layers of gouache. I'm very pleased with it, though I would suggest bringing some elastic with it so you can close it if you'd like to take it on the go.

I've left off reviewing this sketchbook until I've almost finished it so that I've had plenty of time to live with it. I'm quite particular about sketchbooks as I spend a fair amount of time using them and running classes for others. The book is nicely made and has so far survived daily use in my sketching bag and temperatures in the high 30 (degrees) withough the binding coming away or pages becoming loose. One great improvement would be a band to keep the book closed and hold pages together when in use (as my last Moleskine books had). The biggest problem for me, personally, was the paper. It has a good enough weight to stop too much warping when used for watercolour (and I do tend to use a lot of water), but there is simply very little grain at all. For a book described as having "270gsm rough textured pages" and "substantial tooth", this paper has very little tooth at all and almost no grain. I would expect a paper thus described to produce great texture when used with granulating watercolour pigments (I use Winsor & Newton professional series and Daniel Smith), as other cold pressed papers do, but it is really difficult to achieve any granulation at all - it behaves much more like a hot-pressed, smooth paper, but having said that I get nice granulation using Arches hot pressed paper. 3 stars as it's nicely made, but for me the paper is not great as there is no texture. May well suit someone else's style, but I shan't be buying any more of these.

The soft cover is holding up well, despite going everywhere and being pulled in and out of my bag numerous times a day. I prefer the zeta for wet media but this handles them at an acceptable level in a trade-off for extra pages.
