W&N WINTON OIL COLOURS: Never Really a Student Grade... Always The Best Studio Grade Used these paints since 2004 and I think that grading them as "student grade" is both misleading and as it happens, untrue. Cheaper grade paints usually have about 25% pigment, and the rest is oil and inert filler. Thus the price is a lot cheaper. However, this has never been the strategy at Winsor & Newton. Ever since its inception, WINTON has always been noticeably a far better paint, because the often very expensive pigments were replaced by modern synthetic organic pigments. Thus instead of using 25% pigment, Winsor & Newton makes WINTON with a full pigment load ground in exceptionally good Linseed Oil, and a small addition of components required to optimise the handling of each colour. As a result, WINTON is actually better than some so-called "artist grade" paints and largely explains why professional artists also stock it in their studios. Colours are very clean, smell beautifully of pure and honest Linseed Oil, and handle great, with a nice, fairly firm buttery feel. WINTON is a product of excellence, it is Studio Quality, rather than "student grade", it is a paint that stands shoulder to shoulder with brands like Lukas Studio, Lefranc & Burgeois Fine, Sennelier Rive Gauche and Maimeri Classico. Paintings done with WINTON do not yellow much, the finish is just as professional and their reliability is right up there, with the best.

Buttery so you can pick up paint ,apply it then, after wiping your brush with just a rag pick up a different colour on another part of the brush (if the subject is suitable) I bought a starter set to test them and I have added to that since For an absolute beginner I might recommend adding Jackson's Burnt Umber to this set when ordering

The Cerulean Blue hue has some titanium white in it to achieve the colour I'm not sure why that is the blue included I would have preferred a single pigment blue like the ultramarine The set is really good value though and I would recommend it Jacksons oils are very high quality and come in generous sized 60ml tubes

The quality is GREAT for the price, nice pigments, nice buttery texture, very good starter set if you are new to painting (or not new!) it is good for anyone! (I always use a little bit of paint thinner just to soften it though, cause it can be a little on the thick side!)
