Jackson's : Gum Arabic : 60ml

Jacksons Gum Arabic is for use with watercolour to increase brilliance and transparency.
Gum arabic is also used as a binder for watercolour painting because it dissolves easily in water. Pigment can be suspended within the gum in varying amounts, resulting in watercolour paint. Read more about Making Handmade Watercolours on our blog.
Gum arabic slows the evaporation of water, giving slightly longer working time.

I bought this because for experimentation with the idea to make my own watercolours from the earth. It works brilliantly! As a holiday activity, I walked up the road from the house where we were staying and used a teaspoon to gather samples of earth into bottle tops. The rocks round there are red, and the flood water had left dried dust flaking on the concrete road. So that was sample number 1: red earth. Sample number 2 was grey dust, maybe from concrete, maybe from clay in the soil. Sample number 3 was dark burnt earth from round a bonfire. Back on the kitchen table I ground the samples with a stone, until each was a fine powder. Then I dropped in gum arabic from a teaspoon, and mixed it with a matchstick to make a paste. The samples dried in the sun in a few hours. It was surprisingly effective. I made several pictures from the samples, using them like watercolour pans. It helped to add a little ox gall "wetting agent" which I also had brought in solid form. I think it might have been better to bring the liquid ox gall and put it in with the gum arabic. My "watercolours" were quite hard, and the paint took a bit of time to dissolve. Nonetheless it was a fun experiment and one I shall repeat.Rating
I also used the gum arabic to paint over watercolour drawings of insects, to make the wings glisten.
This is a good strong jar, which doesn't leak, and which has plenty in so is good for trying things out. (Posted on 25/05/2019)- Review by Feefo
I used some of this in a homemade oak gall ink from an old recipe. It seemed to work well and was a very good price. (Posted on 23/05/2019)Rating - Review by Feefo

I bought this for watercolour experimentation- so far, I've used it so I can lift paint more easily from stretched watercolour paper and it works brilliantly for this. (Posted on 15/11/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo
Much cheaper than I could find a similar branded product. Used this to mix my own water colour paints and it worked perfectly. (Posted on 15/07/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo
