These grey sheets / blocks of lino are especially made for "linocut" relief printmaking. They are 3.2mm thick, have a fabric backing, and are available in a range of sizes and packs.
The surface of the lino is cut away using special lino cutters or a knife to form the basis of the lino print. The block is inked up with a roller (known as a brayer) and this creates a positive image when printed onto paper or fabric. The printing process can be done by hand or with a press. You can use water-based lino ink, oil-based lino ink, or a block printing medium mixed with paint. You can gently warm the lino before cutting and this will make it softer and easier to work, it can be placed under a hot water bottle, warmed gently with a hairdryer or placed on a radiator for a few minutes to soften.

The original and best! This is the lino you might have used when lino printing at school. I still swear by it, because it’s a very satisfying level of hardness to cut into, and doesn’t squash when you put it through the press. It’s perfect for all kinds of linocut printing - whether you like to cut intricate detail such as fur or hair or detailed foliage, or more ‘Grosvenor School’ style big, bold crisp shapes.Rating
It’s also made of a blend of cork and linseed oil and other biodegradable materials, so it’s much more eco friendly than soft cut or vinyl which are both plastic based.
I transfer my images with carbon paper, which works perfectly - easy enough to see the carbon transfer…if I want to strengthen the lines and make sure they don’t smudge I occasionally go over them with a permanent fine liner pen.
I cut into lino with Essdee linocut tools and Pfeil tools. Once the block is cut I scrub it with an old toothbrush to get rid of all the little bits, and then ink up. Very occasionally you might have a bit of excess lino stuck to the surface of your block which can cause a blemish on your print, but this can easily be sanded off with fine sandpaper.
I usually ink up with oil paint mixed with Schmincke print medium, on to Fabriano Rosaspina paper, to create bold crisp linocut prints.
