Silk Painting
Silk painting is both a popular art form as well as a popular applied craft. Decorate silk scarves or paint a composition on silk. Silk is relatively absorbent and silk paint will sink into the fabric, not imparing its flexibility or movement. Colours appear vibrant. Guttas are little pen like tools that contain a thicker consistency liquid which prevents silk paint from bleeding - Gutta forms a barrier on the silk so that you can control where your paint spreads to. Silk is most easily painted on to when stretched on a frame - this keeps the silk flat and provides a springiness akin to a canvas stretched on a frame - silk painting in this way feels vibrant and light and not fiddly!

Silk Dyes
Silk dyed with Marabu-Silk Colour is a delight because of its exceptional colour brilliance, permanent light fastness and incredibly soft feel. Marabu-Silk Colour is extremely wash-resistant when washed by hand and also dry-clean-resistant directly after the dyeing process.
Application:
A pack of Marabu-Silk Colour (12.5 gms) is sufficient for 75 gms of silk.
Dyeing instructions:
Pour 4 litres of boiling water into a large, rustproof container, the silk should be allowed to float. Stir the pack contents into the water, dissolve and add 40 ml (4 tablespoons) of vinegar essence or 200 ml of white vinegar (5 %) and 4 tablespoons of salt. Stir everything well and dissolve. Moisten the silk with lukewarm water first, squeeze out gently and put in the solution. Dye for 20 minutes moving the silk constantly in the solution. Then rinse the silk in lukewarm water until the water becomes clear. Always wash dyed silk by hand and separately using gentle detergents.
Stretching the dyed silk:
You need a firm support (table, acrylic or glass plate etc.); if this is not washable, you will also need a washable film to cover the support first. Smooth the film over the support very evenly and stick with adhesive tape at one end. Then stretch the opposite side of the film tightly and stick. Use the same procedure for the sides until the film is smooth. Stretch the dyed and ironed silk fabric with masking tape: first stick one edge with masking tape. Then stretch the opposite side of the silk tightly and fix with masking tape.
Silk Painting Mediums
Lightening Medium
Medium Lightening allows for the creation of lighter shades without reducing the quality of the colour or thinning the product.
Marabu Easy Fix
Stretching silk onto a wooden frame is an annoying step in preparing to paint on silk for many people. Marabu-Silk Easy Fix is a good alternative and offers totally new possibilities for silk painting. Simply spray Marabu-Silk Easy Fix on a firm, washable support and stretch the silk. Using this stretching method, painting techniques, which had been impossible until now on silk can be achieved: stamping, stencilling, lettering, painting.
Using this technique, quick and simple painting is possible anywhere, and you will experience a completely new feeling for silk painting. Marabu-Silk Easy Fix is a residue-free adhesive spray, which can be removed from the painting support with cold water or a wet cloth.
Here’s how it’s done:
- You need a firm support (table, acrylic or glass plate etc.); if this is not washable, you will also need a washable film to cover the support first. Smooth the film over the support very evenly and stick with adhesive tape at one end. Then stretch the opposite side of the film tightly and stick. Use the same procedure for the sides until the film is smooth.
- Spray Marabu-Silk Easy Fix on the support or on the film and allow to dry for approx. 5-10 min. Ensure the area is completely sprayed.
- Roll the silk fabric onto a cardboard tube or similar to control stretching better.
- Lay the rolled out silk onto the area sprayed with Marabu-Silk Easy Fix. Then gradually press the silk onto the painting support, brushing any small air bubbles away to the edges. Very small creases or air bubbles will not affect painting.
- Never spray on the silk fabric - always on the support or the stencil.
- After use turn Silk Easy Fix can upside down and spray until the valve is empty (until only gas escapes from it) so that the valve will not be clogged.

Textile paints are washable and can be used for painting on T-Shirts, scarves or ties as well as decorating cushion covers. Textile paints can be used on most fabrics, check on each product if you are unsure as to whether the fabric paint you are interested in is suitable for your textile painting idea. There are a number of textile painting techniques and the paint can be applied in a number of ways, diluted to create subtle hues or spray fabric paint to create interesting effects.
Textile Paint Ranges
Here are some descriptions of some of the textile paint ranges that we offer.
AV Vallejo Textile Colour
Best results with AV Vallejo Textile Colour are obtained on cloth made of natural fibres such as cotton or linen, but excellent results can also be achieved on synthetic fabrics. However, due to the different properties of synthetic fibres, it is best to start with paint and wash tests. If the fabric contains starch, it should be washed before painting.
To avoid painted fabric sticking to support, use cardboard or absorbent paper underneath; remove immediately after painting so that it will not stick to the fabric.
Colours can be applied with brush, sponge, roller, spatula (for airbrushing dilute with Textile Medium); their creamy consistency is especially suitable for use with stencils, silk-screens and mono- print techniques.
All shades of AV Vallejo Textile Colour, except Phosphorescent (Glow in the Dark), can be mixed with one another and with Glitter. Adding Textile Medium to the colours reduces viscosity and renders colours more transparent. Layering colours is not recommended, because overloading the fabric may interfere with proper bonding to fabric. Brushes and other tools are cleaned with water and soap. Dried paint can be removed with alcohol. Stains of Textile Colour are difficult to remove if not washed immediately before drying; the colour is formulated for permanence even without ironing. Textile colour is not hazardous to users' health or to the environment.
Colourist Heat Transfer Paints
Colourist Heat Transfer Paints allow you to create multi-coloured designs without specialist equipment. Using just a domestic iron you can print onto fabric, bags, Tshirts, coasters, placemats, bunting, tiles, jigsaws, Christmas decorations and many other items. You can use different painting techniques such as stamping, cut-outs and stencilling.
Colourist Heat Transfer Paints should be printed onto 100% synthetic surfaces for the most vibrant, colourfast effects. Use polyester or acrylic for the best results. Mixed fibres can be used - the higher the synthetic content, the stronger the printed colours will be.
How to use Colourist Heat Transfer Paints

- Once printed Colourist designs are colourfast and washable.
Useful Tips
- The paints can be applied to ordinary copy paper and all sorts of paper types. Textured paper can be used and the texture will show in the finished print.
- The drying time varies depending on the amount of paint used. You can use a hair dryer or heat gun to speed up the drying time.
- You can use a steam iron or a dry iron to tranfer your design. On a steam iron turn off the steam setting. The transfer process can also be achieved using a heat press.
- Always keep the iron moving during the transfer process to avoid marks made by the steam holes in the plate of the iron.
- Ensure that you move the iron over the whole design to achieve the best results. You can iron for several minutes depending on the item you are printing. You can lift the iron off and reapply several times if necessary. Lift the corner of the painted design to check the transfer. If the the design is still pale, iron for longer.
- Be careful to make sure that the painted design does not move during the ironing process. You can anchor the design in position using heat proof tape.

Metallic Paints
AV Liquid Metal
A selection of 8 permanent metallic colours for fine arts, restoration, decorative arts and hobby painting. Formulated with metallic pigments, soluble only in alcohol, these colours are infinitely more brilliant than their waterbased counterparts, and absolutely durable and light fast.
The colours can be mixed with one another and dry almost instantly. They can be overpainted or varnished almost immediately. The specific weight of the pigment causes the formation of sediment at the base of the container, and paint should be thoroughly shaken or stirred before use. If it is necessary to dilute the colours further, only 96% pure alcohol should be added to avoid oxidation.
Liquid Gold cannot be mixed with water, to the contrary, the slightest contact with water will cause the pigments to rust within the jar. Brushes should be cleaned in alcohol only.
Liquid Gold contains alcohol and is therefore flammable, but the product does not contain xylene or toluene, and is neither toxic nor harmful in normal use.
