Our sculpture section includes traditional and modern sculpture materials, including clay, polymer clay, epoxy resins and plaster. These materials can be modelled with our sculpture tools and painted with any of our model or acrylic paints. The sculpture stand is the perfect solution to easily rotating a delicate 3 dimensional form whilst working on it.
Highly malleable, it is recommended for modelling, sculpture and pottery. Firing in kiln at 980 degrees celsius.
In the modelling clay section there are a selection of clays that require setting after work. Firing clay will need to be fired in a kiln at very high temperatures. Fimo is usually considered a children's clay and is set by placing in the oven for setting. Always consult the instructions on the packaging for the different clays to ensure that you handle them in the correct way.
Natural red or gray clay, ready for use. Formulated with a synthetic binder hardens without firing in 4 or 5 days. Very malleable, it does not dry with cracks. Can be waterproofed to seal non-food containers.
Modroc is a plaster bandage i.e. a gauze impregnated with Plaster of Paris. Once dipped in water, it can be applied to a surface to make a cast or shape. The plaster will start to set after about 3 minutes.
The Modroc will be hard enough to handle after 30 minutes and will develop to full strength overnight. It can be used on its own in a suitable mould, or sculpted around wire or card models. Smaller strips can be cut off with scissors. The Modroc can be decorated and painted with acrylic paints when fully dry.
100% Pure paper pulp / papier maché is ready prepared in an exceptionally white, lighweight formula which mixes easily and instantly. Easy to prepare and economical, add Claycrete to water, mixing enough to use in a half hour of modelling. Craycrete will adhere to Claycrete and various armatures including wood, metal, wire and other paper and cardboard structures. Claycrete can be worked with hands, modelling tools, knives and spatulas. Keep a bowl of water nearby to keep tools and hands moist while modelling.
Crea-Stone a new versatile sculpture medium, easy to mix and use. Mix in a plastic or metal container, slowly add one and a half pints of water for each five pounds of Crea-Stone, mix and allow to stand until the desired degree of firmness is achieved.
Carves like soap, hardens like stone.
Crea-Stone is textured material for casting and carving. Just add water, mix, and cast in cartons to form blocks for carving. When first cast, Crea-Stone blocks are easy to carve, like soap. Aged three to four months, it becomes as hard as stone, yet about four times lighter.
Smooth Crea-Stone with sandpaper or steel wool. This material is chip-resistant. Crea-Stone does not shrink or expand, and it is waterproof and fireproof.
Naturally or white coloured, Crea-Stone can be painted with a brush or spray. It is also suitable for use with direct wire modeling or sand, clay, and wax casting.
Mould, layer and sculpt shapes with this Plaster Of Paris. For model making and plaster casting for crafts and school art.
Plaster of Paris generates heat as it sets. Care must be taken when removing models from a mould. Do not place any part of the body into the setting plaster.
Pebeo Gedeo Resins are easy to use, you only have to mix two parts resin with one part hardener. Then either pour the resin over an item to coat it (Glazing Resin) or pour it into a mould to make a jewel-like casting (Casting Resin).
The Glazing Resin can be applied onto canvas, metal, wood, photos, postcards, and more. This is a popular canvas finishing method I have seen that looks like a thick, shiny varnish layer. To use the Casting Resin you can make your own mould using Pebeo Siligum to make an imprint of an object or simply use Pebeo’s selection of silicone moulds, professional moulds that are unbreakable, self-releasing, multi-cavity, and ultra-flexible.
Transparent and solid, glazing resin will create, through surface tension, self-rounded edges without spilling over when applied to a flat, level surface. This will give you a wet-look, magnifying-glass effect when poured over canvas instead of a traditional varnish or on top of a varnish for extra depth and gloss. I have seen quite a few paintings recently that use this method.
Usually applied over acrylic paint on almost any surface (canvas, paper, metal, glass, etc.) it can also be applied over 3D paints like Vitrail and Prisme colours to fill in between the raised areas of paint and level the surface.
The key tip is to create a little roof over the canvas that prevents dust settling on it for the 12 hours it takes to cure, because it is so glossy that any speck of dust will show.
You can also use the resin as a painting resist by applying it to your surface and then painting or staining over the top with fluid colour. The colour will not penetrate where the glass-like resin has been applied.
For building up transparent layers in a thick surface Pebeo have created Liquid Art Panels. These wooden painting panels have leak-proof raised sides to hold in your poured paints or resins, particularly good for embedding objects in resin. (They would also probably work well for encaustic painting).
Pebeo’s resins for casting can be poured into many types of moulds. Choose from the jewel colours, the crystal clear or the pearly colours.
Testing the Resins
I tested the casting resin by making some small moulds using Pebeo Siligum from bits of old jewellery. The mould making was very easy and the mould came out with all the detail of the object. It peeled off the jewellery which was not damaged, but maybe test part of your object first to be sure you don’t damage yours. The mould is flexible and can be reused many times. I coated mine with Vaseline as a release agent using a cotton bud, Pebeo also make a Liquid Vaseline for easier application into the grooves of your mould.
I then mixed the two parts of the resin, poured between two cups to be extra sure of the mixing and poured into the moulds. I created a roof above to prevent dust settling while it cured.
When I mixed the Glazing Resin I found it to be much less fluid than the Casting Resin, more thick like honey, and it didn’t go very far, I had to mix a second batch to cover my area. The package states that the 150ml package can glaze up to 5 postcards (10.5×14.8cm), which sounds about right. It started setting much sooner than casting resin and I discovered that you should not move it after you have poured the resin on your surface as little wrinkles can form if it shifts.
The bubbles visible in the mixing cup did not remain (in either the Glazing Resin or the Casting Resin) after the curing time.
Both the Glazing and Casting Resins contain instructions that tell you how to measure for mixing the correct amount you will need.
Thin sheets of copper anodized aluminium (one side copper / one side silver) or pure copper (a medium-heavy foil, 6-7 times thicker than household foil) are a traditional thin sheet metal for tooling and embossing. This pure, soft metal takes high detail from tools, easily cuts with a scissors & can be drawn on, embossed or stamped to create raised designs. This great malleability allows you to easily get bas-relief depictions using the repoussage techniques of embossing and engraving. The copper/aluminium sheets come in sizes 10x15cm, 15x30cm, 30x30cm. The pure copper sheets come in sizes: 10x15cm, 20x30cm, 30x40cm.
The pointed and blunt stylus are for drawing, the flat spatulas are for flattening and the curved tool ends are for raising metal.
Simplifies the unmolding of plaster and metal castings, clay embossing and protects moulds. An essential with the use of latex.
Simplifies the demoulding of Crystal Resin and protects the moulds.
An acrylic resin-based product, it is ideal for water proofing containers made from non-firing clay. Its yellow colour makes it easy to see areas which have not been coated. The colour disappears within a few days
in full light.
