1. Register to enter Jackson’s Painting Prize by clicking here. (You cannot login using your customer profile for the Jackson’s Art Supplies online shop, you must create a separate user profile for the competition.)

2. Complete the entry form. This will ask for the following information:

  • A category: This year, we have Subject Category Awards and our new Material Awards. Please select the relevant Material Category (e.g. Oil), and Subject Category (e.g. Portrait/Figure). All entries will automatically be put forward for the general prizes (Overall Winner, People’s Choice). Specific categories (e.g Amateur, Student) must be manually selected to enter if applicable to you.
  • Title of the artwork.
  • An image of your artwork. (max 3MB – jpg, jpeg, tif, png). More details on images below.
  • Medium/s used to make the artwork.
  • Dimensions of the artwork.
  • Year artwork was made.
  • Artist Statement (max 200 words) and Artist Biography (max 180 words). Here’s our help article.
  • Your website and social media (optional)

Images

  • The maximum file size is 3MB.
  • Images of artwork must be at least 1000px wide (with a resolution of at least 72px per inch). 
  • Please ensure that your image is the correct way up before submitting. 
  • Artwork with a copyright stamp or watermark on it will not be accepted. 
  • The image of the artwork should be a clear, high quality photograph which must not show any unnecessary or irrelevant content, such as frames, mounts, walls, tables or any other kind of background.
  • The image should be an accurate representation of the art work, taken in bright natural light, as well as being of a high resolution for reproduction online.

3. To complete your submission, you will be required to pay £6 per artwork. You may enter up to five artworks (five artworks = £30). All entry fees we collect go back into the running of the competition, including improving opportunities for winners. 

  • QUESTIONS ABOUT REGISTRATION AND SUBMISSION

    • How do I register?

      Create an account  here. If you’ve entered before, you may use the same account. See our full step-by-step guide  here.

    • Can I submit more than one artwork?

      Yes, you can submit up to five artworks. Entry costs £6 per artwork.

    • Can I submit a piece of work that has already been sold?

      No, please do not submit an artwork if you do not have access to the original.

       

    • Can we enter a collaborative artwork?

      Yes, submissions from art collectives or collaborations are accepted. Please use the Artist Bio to make it clear that there is more than one artist behind the work.

    • Can I enter an artwork that has previously been exhibited or has won a competition?

      No, we are not accepting entries that have previously won a competition or that have been extensively exhibited.

    • I have an old piece that has never been entered in a competition. Is there a date limit on the creation of the piece?

      We haven’t put a date limit on the artworks. As long as you still have the artwork in your possession, it can be entered.

    • I am trying to enter the current competition, however, when I click ‘enter here’ it takes me to the following message: “There’s nothing to see here right at the moment - either judging isn’t open, or there are yet any entries to judge. Please check back when judging is open or contact your awards organiser”

      This issue is usually solved by clearing your browsing history.

  • QUESTIONS ABOUT MEDIUMS AND IMAGES

    • What are the image requirements for submission?

       – JPEG, JPG and PNG file types are accepted.

       – Maximum 3MB per image.

       – Do not include the mount / frame / any other background surface. These entries will be disqualified. Please only submit straight on, tightly cropped images that display only the artwork.

    • Is there a restriction on the size of the artwork itself?

      No, you may enter a 2D artwork of any size online. However, the maximum size for artworks to be considered for the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead finalists exhibition is 1.2 m on the longest side of the painting.

    • My work is on a circular/oval canvas, so I am unable to photograph it without some background showing, can I enter?

      Yes, you can still enter your work on a circular/oval canvas. Photograph the artwork on a plain white background, and crop the image as tightly as possible.

    • Do I submit a diptych / triptych as one entry or separate entries?

      If a multi-surface artwork (such as a diptych/triptych) is intended to be viewed as one piece, photograph and submit the work as one entry

    • Is there a theme?

      No, there are no theme restrictions, however we do have  criteria.

    • I am a photographer. Can I submit a digital or film photograph?

      No, photography is not accepted in this competition.

    • Can I use photography as part of my process?

      Yes, if photography is part of the process of making the work it’s accepted. Pure photography or digitally edited photography is not eligible.

    • Which mediums are eligible to be considered for the Watercolour Award?

       – Watercolour paint

       – Watercolour Pencils (used wet)

       – Gouache

       – Tempera

       – Ink

    • Are wood burned artworks acceptable?

      We do not accept Etchings or other forms of print. However, if the wood burning is part of the process of making the work which still fits the other criteria, we would accept it.

    • Can I submit an original print?

      No, we are not accepting any printed artworks including monoprint, linocut, etching, screenprint, lithography, aquatint, woodcut, collograph print, or any other form or relief print or intaglio print.

    • I paint with an unusual material e.g. clay, wool. Can I enter?

      As long as it is still flat and not a 3D object, we would be happy to accept it.

    • I paint on unusual surfaces, can I enter?

      Any 2D substrate would be accepted.

    • Are encaustic wax works accepted?

      Yes, as encaustic wax is often combined with oil paint, we are happy to accept that as a medium for this competition.

    • Can I enter a mixed media painting?

      Yes, mixed media works are accepted, but they do not have their own category. If the work uses mostly one medium, you may enter it into the relevant category. If it is an even mix and does not fit into any medium categories, feel free to enter it into one of our Subject Matter categories or the overall prize.

    • Can I enter a giclée print of my work?

      No, reproduction prints are not accepted. The submission must be an image of the original artwork, and you must have the original artwork available.

    • My painting is textured, is that permitted or do they have to be completely flat?

      Many would argue that no painting is completely flat, a painting with texture is fine as long as it isn’t a completely 3D object.

  • QUESTIONS ABOUT ENTRANTS

    • I’m based outside the UK. Is the competition open worldwide?

      Yes, the competition is open to artists worldwide. 

       

    • If I live abroad, can I exhibit my piece in the finalist exhibitions?

      We’ll do our best to exhibit international winners, however, this has to be evaluated case-by-case.

    • Are there any age or education limitations?

      Any artist of any age can enter the competition, no matter their previous experience or artistic education. 

  • QUESTIONS ABOUT THE AFFORDABLE ART FAIR HAMPSTEAD

    • If I am shortlisted, will I be guaranteed a place in the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead exhibition?

      If you are shortlisted, you will have the opportunity to submit your work to be selected for the Affordable Art Fair, but it is not compulsory. Being shortlisted and submitting work doesn’t guarantee that it will be exhibited.

    • Do I have to sell my work?

      Yes, all works exhibited at the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead must be available for sale. The maximum price is £6000. 

    • Does my work have to be framed to exhibit?

      The participating work must be framed, mounted, or complete for presentation and exhibition, suitable to the artwork. 

    • Is there a size restriction?

      The maximum size for artworks to be considered for the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead finalists exhibition is 1.2m on the longest side of the piece.

    • INDEMNIFICATION & LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

      By entering the Jackson’s Painting Prize, each entrant agrees to indemnify, release and hold harmless Jackson’s Art Supplies and its parent, affiliate and subsidiary companies, the software platform, administrator, advertising and promotional agencies, and all their respective officers, directors, employees, representatives and agents from any liability, damages, losses or injury resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from that entrant’s participation in the competition and the acceptance, use or misuse of any prize that may be won. Jackson’s Art Supplies and its parent, affiliate and subsidiary companies do not make any warranties, express or implied, as to the condition, fitness or merchantability of the prize.

      Jackson’s Art Supplies and its parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising and promotional agencies, and all their respective officers, directors, employees, representatives and agents disclaim any liability for damage to any computer system resulting from access to or the download of information or materials connected with the competition.

      Jackson’s Art Supplies and its parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising and promotional agencies, and all their respective officers, directors, employees, representatives and agents disclaim any liability for any breach of copyright made by an artist’s submission, accidental, unintentional or otherwise.

    • ADDITIONAL LIMITATIONS

      If you or an immediate family member is an employee of Jackson’s Art Supplies you cannot enter the competition.

      Jackson’s Prize is non-transferable. No substitution or cash equivalent of prizes is permitted.

      Jackson’s Art Supplies and its respective parent, affiliate and subsidiary companies, agents, and representatives are not responsible for any typographical or other errors in the offer or administration of the Art Prize, including, but not limited to, errors in any printing or posting or these Official Rules, the selection and announcement of any winner, or the distribution of any prize.

      Any attempt to damage the content or operation of this Art Prize is unlawful and subject to possible legal action by Jackson’s Art Supplies. Jackson’s Art Supplies reserves the right to terminate, suspend or amend the Art Prize, without notice, and for any reason, including, without limitation, if Jackson’s Art Supplies determines that the Art Prize cannot be conducted as planned or should a virus, bug, tampering or unauthorised intervention, technical failure or other cause beyond Jackson’s Art Supplies’ control corrupt the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper play of the Art Prize.

      In the event any tampering or unauthorized intervention may have occurred, Jackson’s Art Supplies reserves the right to void suspect entries at issue. Jackson’s Art Supplies and its respective parent, affiliate and subsidiary companies, agents, and representatives, and any telephone network or service providers, are not responsible for incorrect or inaccurate transcription of entry information, or for any human error, technical malfunction, lost or delayed data transmission, omission, interruption, deletion, line failure or malfunction of any telephone network, computer equipment or software, the inability to access any website or online service or any other error, human or otherwise.

    • REFUNDS

      • At any time prior to the deadline, entrants may request a refund for entries they no longer wish to submit. 
      • There are no refunds for entry fees after the longlist results announcement.
      • Entrants may not request a refund because their entries were not longlisted or shortlisted. You cannot request a refund if you take part in the competition and your entry was not selected as a winner. You cannot request a refund after the results announcement.

       

    • DISCLAIMER

      We take each submission and the information regarding it in good faith. We will not conduct any background checks unless we believe there are grounds for disqualification or we have been alerted by an additional party.

      Jackson’s Art Supplies reserves the right to extend the submissions period for any of its competitions.

    • PUBLICITY

      By participating, each entrant grants Sponsor (Jackson’s Art Supplies Ltd) permission to use his/her/their name, artwork, likeness or comments for publicity purposes without payment of additional consideration, except where prohibited by law.
