Cotman watercolour brushes are a synthetic range of the highest quality that have been created using the same skills, generated over many years, as those used in making the finest sable brushes.

For over 150 years the brush makers at Winsor and Newton have applied their knowledge to produce brushes of the highest standard. As new materials have become available they have used their experience to produce new ranges of brushes, each with their own benefits. Cotman brushes were the first complete range of synthetic brushes to be developed by Winsor & Newton.

The secret of the Cotman brush lies in the fibres. By blending fibres of differing thickness Winsor achieve the three most important qualities sought after by the artist. The thicker fibres contribute strength and spring whilst the thinner fibres improve colour carrying capacity, which have recently been improved by 50%. Together they retain a perfect point, time after time.

The handles are specifically designed to provide balance and comfort when painting, the ferrules are made from high quality nickel-plated brass which helps to prevent corrosion, clogging of hair and enables easy cleaning.

In addition, the widest range of styles and sizes to suit all applications are available from mops for large washes, angled brushes for detail, riggers for longer fine lines and of course fans and filberts.

For fine detail, lines & washes.

A traditional and popular head shape for all-purpose water colour work. Can be used for broad strokes yet it will also form a sharp point. They possess good colour holding capacity, sensitivity, spring and durability.

Winsor and Newton Cotman - SERIES 222 DESIGNERS' - Short Handle

Elongated round head for precise detail and line work. With short handle.
Made to the same high standards as Series 101, these brushes have an elongated head shape, which gives and extra fine point and greater colour-holding capacity. Ideal for fine detail work and for use with all media.

Winsor and Newton Cotman - SERIES 333 RIGGER - Short Handle

An extra fine point for painting lines, long scroll work & detail.
Originally designed for painting the rigging on ships, these brushes are excellent for continuous fine lines e.g. tree branches and telephone wires.

Winsor and Newton Cotman - SERIES 777 ONE STROKE (CLEAR) - Short Handle

For creating washes, edges or shapes. The handle has a bevelled tip for burnishing or scraping.
Similar to Series 666 these wash brushes have transparent handles with beveled ends, which can be used for burnishing, scraping or as a palette knife.
