Description: Ultramarine has been extracted in the middle age from the semiprecious stone Lapislazuli. Artiﬁ cial production of equal standardsince 1830. Also used as basic colour for violet tones.

In order to achieve high standards regarding lightfastness, resolubility and stability, Schmincke Horadam watercolours contains only the finest raw materials.

The paints are bound with Kordofan gum arabic from the southern Sahara. Due to the natural source of the binder, the gum arabic does tend to differ slightly year on year. Schmincke continually test the ingredient and the best of the batch is selected to ensure the highest quality is achieved. This means paint which has dried onto your palette can be easily re-wetted and painted with again. Among the range are 139 colours, with 95 single pigment hues for clean mixing.

This is a review of the Schmincke Horadam line of watercolours in general.

I have been slowly building up my collection of these paints because they are able to swing from subtle glazing paints to outright blazing colour with a single swipe of the brush. This is invaluable to me as I work on both detailed biological art and semi-abstract landscape pieces. I’ve come to know very well the various characteristics of watercolour brands, and I can say with all confidence that I’ve found Schmincke Horadam to be the brand to meet all my requirements in one line. I look forward to adding more to my collection~

Horadam Ultramarine Finest, in my opinion, is the best of the best. The usual granulation effect associated with ultramarine, as the name suggests, is much finer than its competitors. This can be really crucial when used to represent a clear blue sky, where grain must be kept to a minimum and only the finest ultramarine colour will do. (Posted on 20/08/2015)
