Christine: Tim Hetherington, ‘You Never See Them Like This’ at Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool. I was a volunteer at Open Eye during the installation of this photography exhibition and really enjoyed watching it come together. The preview night was busy and it was great interacting with people about the work and talking to those who had known Tim Hetherington during his career. It was a very hard hitting exhibition but also very engaging, raising some interesting questions and creating unique dialogue with the gallery visitors.
Christine: Creating my largest piece of work to date for the degree show – after having to cut the frame down to fit the canvas and having trouble moving it around, it was a relief to see it on the wall in one piece. Seeing the degree show come together after weeks of installing it and months of hard work was a highlight too. Also the general atmosphere of a university group studio in the final year – somewhere between intense stress and panic induced hilarity.
Lisa: What art related new year’s resolutions will you make?
Christine: Experiment with different materials. Make as much work as possible and put together an exhibition with a small group of artists.
Lisa: What valuable lesson did you learn about making art in 2013?
Christine: Never throw anything away. Talk to as many people in the arts sector as possible. Don’t use turps in a confined space!
Lisa: What art materials are on your Christmas wishlist?
Christine: Some new oil paints, a massive roll of canvas, and an elf to make canvas frames for me because my woodwork skills are awful.
