The most successful art retreats enable you to feel truly as if you were somewhere apart from your usual everyday existence. By removing yourself from the world in which you normally live you are able to reflect on who you are and why you paint in the way that you do. Finca Las Tobas offers this opportunity as well as inspiring views and accommodation that will really make you feel at ease.
Finca Las Tobas is located in an idyllic country retreat in a beautiful mountain region of South West Spain.
It is a tranquil and secret location – though only an hour from Seville and Portugal’s Alentejo region. With superb accommodation, delicious local food and excellent tuition in our fantastic studio or plein air space, Finca Las Tobas offers all that you would desire from an art holiday.
One Week Painting Course
with Annemarie Kleinhofmeijer and Margaret Arrindell
Finca Las Tobas’ painting courses are individually coached and suitable for beginners and experienced participants alike. Tutors Annemarie and Margaret are both exhibiting artists with plenty of experience, enthusiasm, support and encouragement. This is a relaxing week where you can explore, discover and develop a spirit of creativity through drawing and painting. The level of tuition is varied to meet individual needs. Beginners will learn various techniques, how to use materials and how to apply the basic principles of composition, contrast, perspective and colour. Experienced artists are assisted to develop their strengths, and encouraged to try other perspectives and studies.
Subject matter and inspirations range from wonderful landscapes with hills, woodlands and meadows, rustic farms with dry-stone walls and ancient water-holes, to white-washed villages with their cobbled streets, storks nesting on churches, flower filled balconies and shady doorways. The seasonal skies and colours give a varied aspect, along with the textures of rocks and boulders, olive and oak wood, wild flowers, fruits and fungi.
This delightful area is a declared nature reserve. The “Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park” encompass 184,000 hectares, an impressive 90% of it covered by woodland of mainly Mediterranean oak, and is one of the largest protected forest areas in Europe. With a very low population, many of the surrounding 29 villages have been declared UNESCO Historic-Artistic due to the exceptional grade of preservation in the buildings and cobbled streets.
This is an ideal location for artists who find inspiration and relaxation here, but is also a secret getaway to pursue other activities, including hiking, birdwatching and gastronomy.
Arrival at your destination will undoubtedly bring you a sense of tranquility, but this is really just the beginning of your journey. Here’s what you can expect during a typical day on the retreat:
You will awake in peaceful surroundings (if early enough, perhaps with a glimpse of red deer or wild boar), and help yourself to breakfast provided in your own villa.
The short walk down to the studio gives far-reaching views, and you’ll meander past farms, with animals greeting you over dry-stone walls. We begin the course at 9:30, when you will be armed with materials, easels and everything you need to get creative and nurture your talents. The group starts with ‘warm up’ drawing exercises and then choosing the painting surface, mixing colour and layering techniques. The experienced artists in the group are encouraged to seek their inspirations, new perspectives and studies. All are encouraged to select a subject for plein air painting, observing and studying nature first hand.
A buffet lunch is served on the studio terrace, and under a shady tree everyone can relax and chat, get to know each other and share thoughts and inspirations.
The afternoon is free to continue working, have a tranquil swim in the pool, explore the countryside, or even take a siesta.
The group will meet up in one of the village restaurants for dinner in the evening. This is always a casual and friendly affair, with wonderful local food and wine.
The village is a close community, it’s just one big family, and by the end of the week you’ll no doubt know some Spanish yourself, and be a part of it!
