Place & Space

15-20 September 2015

Place and Space 2015 Espacio Gallery current events

Place & Space explores a contemporary view of landscape evoking the world of abstraction through paintings, prints, and photographs. A range of work by contemporary artists who make a statement about their place in the modern world with its ever expanding complex infrastructure, ‘Place’ represents the formal ideas of landscape in real or imagined locations. Our physical presence is somewhere that can be clearly defined. It may be a place we reside, work or visit. In this age of GPS positioning, our ‘place’ can be digitised and our residences ‘post coded’ and Googled. Our minds however, can be in places where our body is not; in this way place can be exotic or transcendent. ‘Space’ may represent the miniscule detail or the enormity of the infinite. Work in this show presents concepts of distance and transcendence; the relationship of objects within a described space, land reflecting sky, transition of sea and shore, arrangement of buildings in man-made space, or simply the relationship between two or more objects on a table.

Artists: Helen Benson, Helen Campbell, Laurence Causse-Parsley, Anthea Eames, Pia Goddard, Juli Jana, Lee-Ann, Clive Patterson, Cary Whitworth, Helen Ryan, Annie Hudson, Laurel Keeley, Justine Lois Thorpe. Curated by Clive Patterson & Anthea Eames. Private View: Thursday 17 September 6-9pm.

The exhibition illustrates how letter carvers develop and adapt their traditional skills to create contemporary pieces of work. Among the materials on display will be carved Welsh slate, Portland and Bath stone, alabaster items, wood carvings, panels, bowls, pots and plinths. Contributing artists have worked on the UK’s foremost lettering commissions, including the inscription on King Richard III’s coffin and on landmark buildings such as the National Portrait Gallery, the British Museum and the National Gallery.
