Commended Entry Winner: Benjamin Hassan
‘Misty Mountain’
Oil on canvas, 60cm x 90cm
Artist Description:
‘I just love those quiet, lazy summer mornings, birds chirping as the old town wakes up to the warm, radiant sunshine. This landscape depicts the Rock of Gibraltar in the dissipating morning mist.’
Jackson’s Judging Panel:
‘Benjamin Hassan’s painting ‘Misty Mountain’ embodies the timeless join between painterly mark-making and realism. His classically balanced landscape painting draws the eye around the canvas in a gentle, calm movement, emphasizing the still softness of the scene. His perceptive use of colour gives a sense of oppressive heat while drawing narratives between the different depths of field. The smoothness in which the subdued background of preliminary marks consolidates into bolder, brighter tones shows a high level of skill; his considered rendering of this dry, delicate light is truly beautiful to view.’
