Commended Entry: Jonathan Nickisson-Richards
Category: Landscape/Cityscape/Seascape
‘Sky (311217)’
Acrylic on board
120 x 100 x 5 cm
Artist’s Statement:
‘Part of a series of paintings based on sky formations. Colours were mixed in acrylic paint, dried and ground down to form a dust/pigment which was applied onto board, to achieve depth and layers of tone.’
Jackson’s Judging Panel:
‘We were intrigued by this painting on the first look, but even more so when reading about the artist’s process of drying acrylic paint and grinding it back down to a powder. The application of this powdered paint has produced a lightweight quality to the artwork, in which the depth and texture of a shifting sky can be seen and felt. Sky (311217), which was entered in the Landscape/Cityscape/Seascape category, is a contemporary modernist painting where the process and subject matter have informed each other.’
