Last January we published Jackson’s Paper Guide a studio companion for artists working with paints, printmaking or drawing. In August, Leonie Bradley, a wood engraver, filmmaker and the editor of Printmaking Today got in touch to review the Paper Guide from a printmakers perspective. Here are some excerpts from her review published in the Winter 2021 issue of Printmaking Today.
“This slim volume packs in a surprising amount of information. The chapter “How is it made?” is particularly instructive; clearly and thoroughly explaining the process. I liked the non-judgemental explanations such as why there is a discernible front and back with cylinder mould-made paper. Then, without patronising, states it is down to personal preference which to use.”
“Whilst the book assumes no knowledge, there are facts that even professional artists might not know such as why a crease in tracing paper turns white.”
“It is good to see a chapter on ethics, I was relieved to read that fine art papers have a fairly low impact on the environment.”

The watermill turning at Two Rivers. It is the only mill in the UK to use hydro-power to process textile rag for papermaking.
“This book provides a solid overview, particularly suitable for beginners and print workshops.”
