In this fascinating weekend workshop we will look at the dynamic, charming and inventive linocut prints of Edward Bawden, the influential painter, graphic designer, printmaker and illustrator of the 20th Century. We’ll consider his influences and working methods before identifying the key characteristics of his work. Adopting these as ‘guiding principles’ for the weekend, we will then attempt to create our very own Bawden-esque linocut print designs to print on to paper and take home.
The studio does not have a printing press; we will be doing all our printing by hand, using a traditional Japanese printing baren. This means that all of the techniques you learn can be taken away and continued in the comfort of your own workspace or home.
Who: 3 places for printmakers with experience of making at least one linocut print. An allocation of lino tiles, paper and ink will be given to each student, and additional tiles and paper will be available to purchase at competitive prices!
Where: Takahashi Prints, Mivart Studio, Mivart Street, Bristol BS5
When: 29th & 30th April, 10am – 4pm (with an hour’s lunchbreak)
27th & 28th May, 10am – 4pm (with an hour’s lunchbreak)
The cost of this course is: £120. Places are offered on a first-come-first-served basis; each workshop has space for just 3 students, which ensures that space is not too limited and attention from the tutor is not too thinly spread.

At Le Perchoir des Paons the objective is to offer a relaxing atmosphere with the emphasis on enjoyment. Groups are always small, with a maximum of 8 artists at one time; we also cater for non-painting partners at a reduced rate.
We are surrounded by stunning views and many of our guests simply want to take the opportunity to spend quality time painting and drawing in the extensive grounds around the house. Our fully-equipped studio is always available for guests and on top of this we visit some of the charming villages and local sites nearby. Wind down after a day’s painting in our swimming pool or take a pleasant stroll around the attractive surrounding scenery.
We have a number of holidays planned for 2017 which are detailed below. Most of our courses are designed so that guests arrive during Sunday and get to know each other over an evening meal before the group work starts on Monday morning. They will then run through to Friday evening, with guests departing during Saturday (6 nights accommodation/5 days tuition). Additional days can be added if you wish to extend your stay to fit in with your travel arrangements.
You will need to organise your own flights/transport to us but we can arrange pickups from airports/stations by prior arrangement for an additional charge. Our closest airports are Bergerac & Brive both about an hour away, Toulouse about 1½ hours and Rodez just over 2 hours. Our nearest stations are Gourdon and Cahors, both within easy distance. If you choose to hire a car we will provide directions etc.
Sunday 30 April – Saturday 6 May
Sunday 21 May – Saturday 27 May
Sunday 4 June – Saturday 10 June
Sunday 25 June – Saturday 1 July
Sunday 9 July – Saturday 15 July
Sunday 27 August – Saturday 2 September
Sunday 17 September – Saturday 23 September
Thursday 5 October – Monday 9 October
The cost of the course, with tuition and accommodation, is £850/€950.
This course will suit both beginners and those with more experience who wish to explore and expand their drawing and painting techniques using a mixture of media including charcoal, graphite, oil and chalk pastels, watercolours, acrylics etc. The tutored groups will be for mixed abilities and formally structured, with Susie Home, your tutor & host, on hand to provide guidance and advice. We can also offer workshops which are less formally structured, as they are primarily designed to enable you to work alongside – and interact with – likeminded people. All basic materials and equipment will be provided within the cost of the holiday, however if you have particular favourite brushes or media please bring them along. Additional materials (such as specialist pastel and water colour papers, acrylic boards, canvas boards etc) will be available to purchase during your stay with us if needed.
All our holidays include full board and lodging with Continental Breakfast, a light lunch, refreshments and a delicious home cooked evening meal with wine. On one evening we will visit a local restaurant for a meal, for which there will be a small additional cost (around €25 per head). Please let us know in advance if you have any special dietary requirements.
April 30 (Sunday) 10:00 am - May 6 (Saturday) 5:00 pm
