Colour mixing – you can’t ‘get it’ unless you do it!
Are you interested in learning about colour but don’t know where to begin? This workshop is a great way for you to get started without being overwhelmed with too much information.
GOLDEN Acrylic Colours are considered the best brand by many artists. Working from a GOLDEN Modern Palette set of seven heavy body acrylic colours plus white (paints are supplied by the tutor), this workshop will help you to explore the uniqueness of pigments and their mixtures. Through a series of practical exercises students will learn about colour harmonies, work with contrasts and colour temperature, and discover how colours can enhance one another.
The day will take you through helpful paint mixing exercises which will show you how to create, with a fairly small selection of paints, the widest possible range of unique colours. This will include making the brightest and cleanest of mixes as well as mixing traditional colours to create more muted earth tones. You will discover the nuances of pure pigments compared to mixed colours, learn about colour families and about the difference between organic (modern) and inorganic (mineral) pigments.
The workshop will include demonstrations, as well as group and individual instruction. It is useful for both beginning and intermediate painters. The information can be applied to all wet media.
All materials are supplied and to be shared during the workshop: GOLDEN Paint, boards, brushes, palette knives etc. Just bring an apron and a packed lunch, your tutor will take care of the rest! At the end of the workshop, you will be confident to buy the GOLDEN colours you need to make the most colour mixes, which will be available at the shop upstairs.
Course Outcomes will include:
• How to make beautiful colour combinations using Golden Paints
• Make personal colour wheels and samples for you to refer back to
• Learn about inorganic pigments VS organic pigments
• Learn about “clean” colour mixing
• How to avoid “muddy” colours
• Have some understanding of colour theory and its relevance to painters
• Know how to mix the widest range of colours from a relatively small palette
• Paint inspiring colour combinations from still lifes and references
• Be better able to make informed choices when selecting from the paint shelves in art supply shops
The tutor of this colour-mixing course is Laura Fishman, an American artist based in London who is best known for her dynamic and colourful abstract works of art. Her artistic vision is to connect with the viewer through the language of colour and paint, and to convey her painting experience. She explores the characteristics of the paints she works with through experimentation, pushing the boundaries of what we perceive to be painting as much as possible whilst creating truly unique works of art. You can read our earlier interview with Laura Fishman, and visit her website here.
Laura Fishman earned her Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting in the United States from the State University of New York. She continued her studies in textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York where she worked as a colourist and a designer for many years in the fashion district.
