Pastel artist Liz Elsworth usually uses Unison and Sennelier soft pastels for her artwork, but she tried Art Spectrum Soft Pastels for the first time in her painting ‘Coming in For a Landing’. Liz explains a bit about the pastels and shows us the painting step-by-step as it is being created.
Art Spectrum Artists’ Soft Pastels Review
by Liz Elsworth
I had the pleasure recently of trying the Art Spectrum Soft Pastels.
When I received them, first impressions as far as packaging did not give me high expectations, compared to say a luxurious box of Unison pastels, but I can say that I was very pleasantly surprised by them. They felt solid to handle. I used the half stick size, usually a preference for me as I break pastels for ease of use anyway. When snapped into smaller sizes they broke cleanly and did not crumble to bits as I have experienced on occasions with both Sennelier and Unison soft pastels.
I used M-Teintes Touch paper for my painting which worked well with these pastels. Normally for this size painting, 11×14 inches, I would have resorted to pastel pencils for some detailed areas, but found the Art Spectrum pastels were solid enough for use for definitive line marking and detailing and not scratchy as I have found with some Unison pastels. The consistency allowed a controlled deposit of pigment when adding a build up of colour in the underpainting.
Art Spectrum pastels are also soft enough to blend easily and were consistent in their softness across the colour range in the box, again unlike other brands such as Unison which I have found can vary greatly depending on the pigment of the pastel. Pigment-wise they match the vibrancy I have found with Sennelier being very similar in their properties. I will be adding the Art Spectrum pastels to my normal go-to pastels for my future painting projects.
