Gamblin Torrit Grey is a unique colour born out of Robert Gamblin’s belief that ‘pigment dust should not go into the earth, water or landfill, but into paint’. Every spring, the Torit® Air Filtration system which is used to remove airborne powders from working spaces in the Gamblin factory is serviced. The filters are cleaned and the excess pigment is collected. Rather than discarding the high quality, expensive pigments, Gamblin paint makers recycle them into a shade of oil paint they have named Gamblin Torrit Grey.
Gamblin Torrit Grey cannot be bought. The production of the colour is limited by the capacity of Gamblin’s air filtration system, which means that the paint is not available in tube form, but in a small 12ml sachet.
While stocks last, Jackson’s are including a free 12ml card sachet of Gamblin Torrit Grey with every order which includes a Gamblin product. The product cannot be viewed on our website, but will be added automatically at the checkout stage. Only one tube per order!
Like a ‘palette grey’, which many frugal oil painters produce from their palette scrapings, the composition of Gamblin Torrit Grey is not stable. Each vintage is subtly different because the air filtration system catches airborne pigments from a different selection of colours which have been made in the factory that year. It normally varies from a medium dove grey to a dark earthy grey. Most years, the colour has a greenish tinge because of the great strength of the Phthalo Green pigment, which is a dark bluish green.
This year’s Torrit Grey is a neutral khaki shade, useful for muting bright tones. It can be mixed with white to produce a pale, elephant-skin grey.
