Commended Entry Winner: Emily Powell
‘Exe Estuary’
Acrylic and oil bar, 600mm x 840mm
Artist Description:
‘View from Exmouth across to Starrcross on the Exe Estuary, Devon. Painted in January 2018.’
Jackson’s Judging Panel:
‘This expressive and gestural painting is a fantastic example of how emotive colour and raw mark-making can be. By giving just enough information to reference a landscape, Emily’s painting allows the viewer space to build their own narrative based on their connotations and memories. The simple line work slices the image into planes, the depth of the terrain indicated by cleverly placed splashes of vibrant, contrasting orange and yellow ochre. The energetic marks are perfect for capturing the feel of an ever changing estuary.’
