Jackson’s Painting Prize 2023
Materials Award Winners
Watercolour Award
Catherine MacDiarmid
“I never seek to flatter, but rather to unveil hidden narratives and record situations the way I see or recall them, representing for me a memory, relationship, event, or even a feeling, making each piece very personal.
I may choose to produce each image in oils, watercolour or charcoal, as each one has individual qualities and challenges, and can express the image in different ways.”
Oil Award
Anna Kurkova
“Three Magi are a visual interpretation of a timeless story of a call answered and joy celebrated. But this time the sky is clouded and the guiding star absent. An allegory for life’s journey, this pilgrimage is more personal, less structured, and perhaps without a set destination.”
Acrylic Award
David Kinsey
“My artworks are incredibly laboured over with hours of studio time. I like the idea of them having gone through a type of epic trail, because I would like them to be an echo of moments of time that occur in one’s life.”
Dry Media Award
Kylie Sandford
“Soft pastels are an ideal medium for capturing the textures, shapes and colours of lichens and mosses, rock and bark. I use a variety of techniques, including layering, blending, and painting with water, to create these richly detailed and impressionistic images on paper.”
Jackson’s Painting Prize 2023
Subject Award Winners
Scenes of Everyday Life Award
Robbie Bushe
“From May 2021 I made an observational drawing from our home garden each day as a participant in ‘100 Day Project Scotland’. These 100 drawings have formed the starting point of a series of narrative paintings and animations started in 2022.”
Mind’s Eye Award
Iain Andrews
“I am interested in how stories are retold and re-imagined, and how the retelling alters and embellishes the original even as it seeks to render it vital and alive once again for a new audience.”
Botanical Award
Julia Asenbaum
“Using watercolours I tried to capture every little detail of this otherworldly fern. The process of observing and painting felt like a journey to an alien landscape.”
Still Life Award
Li Ning
“I believe that a painter should look beyond their subject. Beyond it means, a painter ought to discover their subject’s potential to transcend its physical form.”
Animal Award
Rosie Phillips
“A miraculous moment of calm in my collie pup, following a very, very long walk.”
Non-representational Award
Petra Schott
“This painting is an homage to the many works of Pierre Bonnard painting his wife taking a bath. He captures intimacy and sensuality – and this is what interested me in my painting too. Taking a bath means being with oneself, enjoying a calm, sensual moment in the fluid water medium, a moment with oneself.”
Land/City/Seascape Award
David Stewart
“My landscape paintings address the tension between suburban and natural spaces in a contemporary context. As a painter originally from the West Coast of Canada, I am interrogating the legacy of Canadian landscape painters from a critical perspective that is conscious of my own European settler heritage.”
Portrait/Figure Award
Chris Longridge
“Venus and Cupid is a domestic portrait that references mythology and baroque painting while employing a discontinuous composition that challenges straightforward interpretation.”
