Artists who enjoy painting on ready-made painting boards and panels no longer need to compromise on the quality of the surface on which they paint.
Jackson’s Handmade Linen Boards are made in house, using the finest linens.
There are 7 varieties from which to choose:
- CL540 – Extra Fine Oil Primed Linen
- CL536 – Medium Grain Oil Primed Linen
- CL574 – Extra Fine Universally Primed Linen
- CL535 – Fine Grain Universally Primed Linen
- CL565 – Rough Grain Universally Primed Jute
- CL696 – Fine Grain Clear Primed Linen
- CL681 – Rough Grain Clear Primed Linen
Oil primed canvas is ready for use with oil colours. Universally primed canvas has an acrylic surface that is suitable for oils, acrylics and other media. Choose the clear primed canvas if you wish to paint on the lovely brown colour of the linen. If you are painting in oils the clear linens will need one more coats of clear polymer medium to be enough of a barrier for oil paint.
The linen is glued onto a sheet of MDF with PH neutral adhesive which not only fixes the linen to the board but also forms sufficient barrier between the board and linen to protect the linen from any impurities. Each type of linen board is available in the following sizes: 13x18cm, 18x24cm, 20x30cm, 24x30cm, 30x40cm, 40x50cm. These superior linen weaves will enhance your enjoyment and the appearance of your painting.
WARNING: Once you try painting on our Jackson’s Handmade Linen boards you may find it difficult to revert to your regular art panels!
These are particularly suited to plein air painting as they fit in most pochade boxes.

The finest quality MDF from manufacturers mainly within Great Britain and some (about 10%) Europe. Medium Density Fibreboard is made from 50% wood sourced from sustainable forests. This produces a high quality board with low formaldehyde certified to BS EN 622 Class A and meeting the European E1 standard.

What I have read is that if they are sealed correctly (with the reverse breathable) then they should be long lasting. So don’t prime the back of the panel.

Hi,
I have bought a few of these recently. You have written
that the linen is glued down to the board and this
stops any impurities, does this glue act as a size also
(like rabbit skin glue) and does it protect the linen
from the oil primer to prevent the oil rotting the linen.

All our linen panels are made with primed linen, so they have been sized and primed.
If the linen is oil-primed it has been sized first to prevent the oil primer touching the canvas.

sized with rabbit glue?

I’ve just emailed the supplier of the Italian linen that feature on the boards to find out what they use to size their Oil Primed, Universal Primed & Clear Primed linens, as soon as I have heard back from them I will let you know.

It is the Italian linen from Belle Arti. The codes in the article relate to the same codes for the linen sold by the metre.
I am looking at the oil primed extra-fine
panels and wonder if I can cut them to a
different size with a fine saw?

The handmade linen boards are on MDF, which I have cut with a saw before. I started the cut with a stanley knife to get an accurate line.
When we make our boards the glued on linen is trimmed to the edge of the board after it has dried, by placing it linen side down and cutting along the edge with a new, sharp stanley knife blade.
Although I haven’t cut the prepared boards before, it should be possible. To avoid the saw tearing up the linen, I think the linen should be cut through first with a straight edge and stanley knife, the linen piece removed and then the board cut.
