At Jackson’s we stock a variety of rigid painting surfaces, in addition to stretched canvases. These include aluminium painting panels, handmade linen boards and smooth plywood panels.
There are many reasons for painting on a panel instead of a stretched canvas:
- Conservators say it is ‘best practice’ to paint on a rigid surface, especially for paints than can crack like oil colour, egg tempera, encaustic and metal gilding, as an inflexible surface is the only way to prevent cracking over time.
- With all types of paints there are also aesthetic reasons to paint on a panel, because the wood or aluminium can become a part of the work.
- Practical reasons for using a panel might include easy transport because they are thin or lightweight and this also makes for easier storage.
- Some artists like the resistance of the surface – it is solid, not bouncy like stretched canvas (though some artists prefer the “give” of stretched canvas).
- Other artists choose a panel for conceptual reasons such as: the rigid structure makes sense with a cityscape, for instance.
The everyday price of Jackson’s Painting Panels is a very good value. After they see the good quality, artists are continually surprised by the affordable prices.

Aluminium art panels make even, rigid and lightweight painting surfaces. They offer a great value with a conservation quality stable support.
Unlike canvases (with wooden stretcher bars) or wooden panels, aluminium panels are artwork supports that will not release gases over time and will barely react to changes in humidity and temperature. The conservation benefits and archival properties of the metal mean that aluminium art panels can easily be stored in damp studios where traditional painting surfaces would warp. Areas on the aluminium painting panels can also be left exposed, as the material won’t tarnish due to its resistance to oxidation. The lightweight nature of the aluminium panels makes them ideal for large artworks which need to be transported.
These panels have specially treated surfaces for paint to adhere to. They are ready for use with all types of painting media, including oil, acrylic, watercolour, gouache and ink. No further priming is necessary as the paint will adhere to the metal. Jackson’s Aluminium Panels have a smooth, grey, satin finish, but can be primed with any of the Jackson’s primers should a different colour be preferred. Jackson’s Aluminium Panels are the perfect solution for those who like to paint on ultra smooth, hard surfaces. The smooth panel means that paint can easily be spread and that brushes never need to be scrubbed into the surface. These panels have an industrial finish with slight marks or imperfections but please keep in mind that either side of the panel can be used.
“This is the future for artists, for best way to offer their art to the public. The turning we have been waiting for.”

Jackson’s Handmade Linen Boards
Artists who enjoy painting on ready-made painting boards and panels no longer need to compromise on the quality of the surface on which they paint. Jackson’s Handmade Linen Boards are made in house, using the finest linens. There are 7 varieties to choose from:
• CL540 – Extra Fine Oil Primed Linen
• CL536 – Medium Grain Oil Primed Linen
• CL574 – Extra Fine Universally Primed Linen
• CL535 – Fine Grain Universally Primed Linen
• CL565 – Rough Grain Universally Primed Jute
• CL696 – Fine Grain Clear Primed Linen
• CL681 – Rough Grain Clear Primed Linen
The linen is glued on to a sheet of MDF with PH Neutral adhesive which not only fixes the linen to the board but also forms sufficient barrier between the board and linen to protect the linen from any impurities. Each type of linen board is available in the following sizes: 13cmx 18cm, 18cm x 24cm, 20cm x 30cm, 24cm x 30cm, 30cm x 40cm, 40cm x 50. These superior linen weaves will enhance your enjoyment and the appearance of your painting. Once you try painting on our Jackson’s Handmade linen boards you may find it difficult to revert to your regular art panels!
Our supplier describes their MDF:
The finest quality MDF from manufacturers mainly within Great Britain and some (about 10%) Europe. Medium Density Fibreboard is made from 50% wood sourced from sustainable forests. This produces a high quality board with low formaldehyde certified to BS EN 622 Class A and meeting the European E1 standard.
These painting panels are made in-house at our shop here in East London!
Jackson’s Smooth Wood Painting Panels
Jackson’s Academy Wooden Panels are made of an ultra smooth, sanded light plywood, reinforced on the reverse with bracing to prevent warping. The beautiful un-sized wooden surface is ready to paint on with water and acrylic based paint, or can be sized or primed for use with oil paint. Sturdy yet lightweight, they are perfect for both painting projects out of doors as well as in the studio. We recommend priming with 3 layers of acrylic gesso and sanding between layers to produce a smooth yet slightly absorbent surface on which to apply both impasto marks and delicate washes.
The surface of a panel is beautiful and the texture is very smooth. You can prime the wood with white or clear primer and paint directly on it or if you prefer the texture of canvas or paper you can use acrylic gel and adhere canvas or paper to the surface, then prime and paint on that.
They work great for encaustic painting and can also be used for a work support or drawing board. These panels are available in 20mm (approx. 3/4″) and 50mm (approx. 2″) deep profiles, in 33 sizes in inches. The 20mm deep panels go up to 24×36 inches (61x91cm) and the 50mm deep panels go up to 36×60 inches (91x152cm).
